Help with finding a setting on a lower budget (~3-4k)

So I am looking for a ring and being a student am still on a fairly constrained budget. I have been doing a good amount of reading and searching online, especially here on PS, and believe I can do better than the prices at the bigger mall retail stores. The problem I have is my limited budget. I believe I can get a setting for around ~$1500 and hoping to get a princess cut (above vs2/H, ~1carat) for around $2000.

Questions:
One thing I am worried about, is the cost of getting the stone set into the ring from an outside seller at this total cost be comparable to finding a preset ring/stone?
Along the same lines, would it save me more to buy from a single location with the hope of finding a matching band or again better to buy separately?

Moving onto the ring itself. The GF has identified she would like a princess cut, above .8 carat, in a white gold or platinum metal. She has found one setting at Kay's which she really likes but dislikes the center stone and I feel the price at Kays is 50% more than I would pay online.

(I feel the center diamond offered here is really only a $600-$800 stone and the 14K band is not worth $2200)

I have been hunting for a comparable setting in 18K and Platinum

which she has said she likes but not as much as the one from Kays. This may be due to the fact she has handled the one from Kays directly or to the minor distinctions between the rings but I really would like to make sure to get what she wants. She really likes the rounding and simplicity of the sides/edges and also the inset channeling of the side diamonds. She also likes the slight inset of the center stone into the band itself. I would like to get the higher metal quality than the 14K of the kays(unsure if she needs platinum but I like the idea of it staying shiny longer since she will be wearing gloves a lot). I have searched bluenile, whiteflash, and a number of other sites listed here and have not found an exact setting.

More questions:
Are these ring designs specific to the companies selling them, do I have any chance of finding the exact setting in a different metal from a different company?
Is my budget feasible or should I just attempt to negotiate with Kays for a better center diamond at a more reasonable price (not sure how open to negotiation they would be)?

I am sure I will come up with more questions but figure this is probably more than enough to start. Sorry for the length. Thanks for any help/advice.

I'm not used to looking up princess cuts, but I'm not sure you'll be able to get an ideal cut 0.8ct stone for your $2000 stone budget. Depending on how far you're willing to go down color wise, you might have to aim for around a 0.7ct, like this one from BGD:

If you don't mind fluorescence ($1995): http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/d...18-h-si1-princess-diamond-ags-bl-104062901008
($1730): http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/d...0.705-i-si2-princess-diamond-ags-104061575008

I would definitely ask whether both are eye clean (the SI2 especially)

As for the setting, in your case I think you should skip the extra cost of platinum. Many vendors will set stones from other vendors (Whiteflash will set a stone from Brian Gavin), but there's usually an extra cost. IIRC WF charges $100 to do this. The most similar setting BGD has is this one, but it's quite over budget ($2310 in 18k gold). Although it's not an option on their site, it might be worthwhile asking whether they can do it in 14k gold to lower the cost.

WF has a limited selection of stones in your budget/criteria right now. Maybe someone else can chime in with choices from JA

Hmm, so the reason I was thinking I could get a 1 carat was through the diamond search setting but I was not requiring having the report. When searching with GIA required I am seeing only .8. One such is this

Should I not even consider ones like this

http://search.virtcert.com/cgi/u/1012/v.cgi?stock=15342151&_s=1012&_p=sdf348gd743&_c=&_fs=1&prestock=&_ln=ps

or this

?

So if I buy a setting and a diamond separately, I need to get the place I am buying the setting to set the diamond? I am not able to get a qualified jeweler locally do it or would this be foolish? Do I ship the diamond to the company I am buying the setting from?

thanks

At James Allen, which is typically very reasonable in price, the biggest carat weight princess cut under 2k within your parameters is only .73 carats, and the cut isn't good on that one. The biggest princess under 2k regardless of color, cut, and clarity is still only 0.84 carat (I color, I1 clarity). The diamonds you're looking at aren't graded by a lab, or aren't graded by a reputable lab, so you can't trust what they claim the color, clarity, and cut of the diamond are. You want to look for diamonds graded by GIA or AGS.

i really like that fluor one posted. a lot!

plus this is you can forgo platinum

otherwise, you just can just buy the stone and take it to a local jeweler to have it set. some places you might have to insure it though. it is easiest to set it all at one place.

Personally, if it has to be a in plat, i would buy a plain solitaire, and just have pair it with a nice channel set wedding band.

One of the problems with buying the diamond from one vendor and getting another vendor (that is selling the setting) to set it is the extra fees, plus it's recommended on insuring the diamond before they work on it. Although rare, stones can get damaged while setting. If the stone and setting were from the same place, if something happens to the stone they'll replace it as it was their product and their fault.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm not even sure if it's possible to buy just the setting from a vendor and have another different vendor set it. To my understanding, the head has to be made for that specific stone's dimensions. I think the BG Blue stone I posted is worth asking about (eye cleanliness).

To answer your question, I think it's worthwhile to go with a vendor that provides ASET/IS and actual images, especially for princess cuts. There's just too many unknowns without them
