Help with Engagement Ring!

Just started the hunt and have no idea were to begin, what to spend etc...

I have a friend that dropped 13k for a loose diamond at an auction. Should I look in retail stores or focus online with a good in person appraisal? Feel like there is a lot of value online even when you are talking about spending a good chunk of cash. Size is more important than clarity to me. As long as you can't look at the diamond and see blemishes then clarity isn't a big deal.
