Help With Emerald Cut

Hello all,

I would greatly appreciate hearing your thoughts on the following stone. The stats are from the EGL cert.

H-VS2
Wt. 1.52
7.33 x 6.14 x 3.87 mm
Total Depth: 63%
Table Width: 69%
Crown Height: 8%
Pavillion Depth: 52%
Girdle: Thn POL
Pol: VG
Sym: VG
Cutlet: None
Fluor: None

I am worried about the L/W ratio(low), the tbl width(high), and the crown height(low). Should these be deal-killers?

First of all the L/W ratio is strictly a matter of personal preference. Nothing more. If you like it a bit more square, then this might be a good ratio for you...

Second, the depth is really good, but the table does seem a bit high. It could end up looking more glassy.

Third, the crown height is a bit lower than the "recommended" numbers of 10+%.

That all being said, have you seen the stone? That ultimately is what you need to see as to whether it is a good stone or not. You can probably find better "numbers" here by plugging in your preferred ratios. I found this just doing a quick search:

1.40 G VS1 63.6% 58% GIA md vs vg vg no 7.25x5.85x3.72 $7423*SP - $8301 (depending on the retailer)

Granted, you''d want to see the report, Sarin, etc., but it gives you an opportunity to see that there are stones out there that are out there!

A H vs2 is a lovely combo for an EC.

This EC is pretty squarish looking with a 1.19 ratio. This is a personal preference. This EC will look quite "fat". Some people like it and others don't. You can play plug in the physical dimensions in the fancy shape selector at this website to see what it looks like.

The depth is really nice. Not shallow and not too deep. It'll face up quite well for its carat weight.

The table is pretty big. The plus is that the diamond will look much bigger and might look brilliant (white light). The negative is that the large table will most likely make the diamond look glassy. It will probably not have much fire (coloured light).

The low crown height reaffirms that this EC most likely not be firey and stands a higher chance of looking dull.

The girdle is evenly thin, so that is all right.
A VG for polish and symmetry is wonderful.

All in all, I would pass up on this EC because of the table size and crown height. Try to keep both the depth and table sizes in the 60% to 65% range. The crown height should be at least 10% and upwards.

After learning and shopping for my own EC, I now want others to see that ECs is not dull or plain looking. A well cut EC can blind your eyes. I know you shopped pretty long and hard for yours too, so you know your stuff!

Nothing happened to my EC. I still love it and am constantly mesmerized by how it sparkles and scintillates. I sure hope it didn''t sound like it got lost or damaged.

I was only referring to the time I was upgrading my EC which was sometime last year.

that looks like a killer stone you found! i d like to point out (not anything earthshaking) that all fancies look smaller for their weight than a comparably cut round--so i was reluctant to buy an EC stone with depth greater than 65........i ended up with 61.............. mind you depth is ONLY one factor but i really think EC''s usually look comparably so small that it was close to ideal cut or nothing for me. as it was --i lost some weight in a higher than ideal crown (17%) but i felt it benefited the brilliance of the stone so it was an okay compromise

No... not "damaged", I thought it would be out in the sun with appropriate precious dressing

These numbers are VERY nice!! The depth and table are small and the Depth > Table, which is preferred. The L/W ratio is more in my preference of 1.4 - 1.5 (but again, this is totally based on preference). It''s important to see WHERE the inclusions are located and make sure that they aren''t on seen within the Table, but off to the sides where they can be hidden by prongs.

Can you get pictures? Can you see it in person? Or is this a trusted dealer who can tell you what the diamond looks like (be your eyes for you?!)??

I''m not sure if they are a trusted dealer or not, but I did find this: Member of Rapaport, Jewelers Board of Trade, Jewelers Security Alliance, Better Business Bureau, Jewelers of America. Not sure how important these things are. Anyway, they sent me the EGL cert but I cannot clearly see exactly where the inclusions are. I have been emailing a guy named Tony. I will ask him where the inclusions are. Thanks, AChiO!!

You're welcome...I would do a search on this board regarding Union and see what others say. I don't know anything about this personally, so I can't weight in on the company...

I would ask them to send you pictures of the stone to see what you think of it and find out if they're willing to send it to an appraiser of your choice so you can examine the stone yourself with an unbiased opinion...

Hi, I''m always peeking in on EC threads to try to learn myself.

My new diamond came from Union Diamond. We live in Atlanta so we were able to see the diamond choices in person. However, every aspect of our dealings with Union was great. Jeff is the GG there and he was willing to do a lot of extra research for us to ensure that we were comfortable with the purchase. We worked a bit with Tony, too. I really think they will steer you in thr right direction. But it never hurts to get a second appraisal just in case. Their return policy is really nice (30 days).
