Hello all,

Just joined the forum and trying to catch up on the wealth of information here. I am looking to buy a diamond for an engagement ring and would greatly appreciate any help I can get!

I have been to a local jeweler that came highly recommended and found the following round stones that my girlfriend and I liked the most:
1) .81 carat/D/VS2/Very good cut/6.09mm - $7k
2) 1.00 carat/D/SI2/Excellent cut/6.5mm - $8.1k

Based on the many stones we saw, I would say that cut and color are the most important. I did get a bit confused since we were shown Lazare diamonds that have an ideal cut, and we just did not like how the diamonds looked (they ranged from H to F color) compared to the above diamonds. From my research on this site, it also seems like the above may be a bit more expensive than what is expected.

I am located in Houston, and I know that Whiteflash and Brian Gavin are located here, and I would have no problem buying a quality stone from them with your help. Ideally, I prefer those vendors to out of state ones since I would like to go in and take a look at their showroom/stones. My girlfriend's ring size is a 3.25 so we are looking in the .8 to 1.00 carat range since her finger is so small, and trying to maximize the other C's (D/E color; Excellent cut). Also, I would be happy with a stone in my lower carat range if it's diameter was a bit bigger than 6.1mm.

Any thoughts on the above stones and better alternatives? Unfortunately, when I went in to look at the stones I did not know about depth, table and angles so I do not have that information. Thankful to have this site with so much to learn from and open to any suggestions!

Hello ! Browse whiteflash and Brian Gavin enventory online ! I am in Houston also :))) then you can come over to their showroom and see the diamonds you are interested in ! The onlh downside is you have to my sale tax:(( good luck! It’s exciting time !!!

I would pass on stone 1, poorly cut. Stone 2 is most likely a 60/60 stone and there is not enough info to comment further.

These are the stones I would recommend from WF based on an $8,000 budget for the diamond:

.93 E VS1 $8,082
https://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-4045318.htm

.93 E SI1 $6,594
https://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3929359.htm

.91 E SI1 $6,452
https://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3955161.htm

I would highly recommend making an appointment with BGD and WF to see their stones. You may find that in a super ideal cut diamond you are able to go lower in color and get a larger stone or save some money. Ideal cut diamonds face up much whiter and have more brilliance and sparkle compared to the diamonds you have viewed.

Hi rr28453,
I'm not sure why the stones you are finding are so expensive. If you want to stick with D color, that is an amazing choice. They are like collectors items, but you can find similar ones for almost half the price. I'm also new to the forum and have been researching like crazy for my own ring. For round stones found that the depth should be 58-63%. If you make sure to get an excellent cut, you should have nothing to worry about. There are a lot of sites online that have satisfaction guarantees, so I wouldn't personally pay such a premium so I could see it first in person. But you should do what your comfortable with.

This is a nice option:

This is good as well, a little cheaper because it has strong florescence:

Good Luck!

Sorry if this comes off as harsh, but these are NOT the recommended specs by anyone on PS. Depth should be 60-62.4 (ish), and neither of the stones you recommended have angles that we would recommend.

OP: I would stick to X/X/X for GIA stones (no "very good"). I would definitely go visit WF and BGD, because then you can see stones in person. I would look at WF's ACA line--becuase of the super ideal cut you might find yourself surprisingly happy with their F colored stones, which would help with costs and/or allow you to get a bigger stone.

EDIT. Depth should be 60-62.4. Typo.

Is Rockher a PS-recommended Vendor?

Since you are in the Houston area I would definitely visit Whiteflash or BGD in person.

Thank you all for your replies, I will definitely schedule an appointment. Do you recommend going to visit both WF and BGD or just one of them? Also, Crbl99, appreciate you searching those stones for me, they look great.

Some follow up questions:

1) I came across this on WF, thoughts on it? https://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-4045324.htm

2) For my personal knowledge, what separates this diamond ("Expert Selection") from the "A Cut Above" ones? Having looked at WF's A Cut Above criteria page, this diamond's specs seem to meet the figures criteria but it is not classified as such.

BGD have very few stones just shy of 1ct, especially in D-F based on a cursory search I did on the bus trip into work. Will take a look at Whiteflash later today.

Re: #2, there is a tiny sliver of green in the ASET image under the table at around 7 o’clock. Also, in the Hearts image, I am seeing very very tiny clefts in some of the hearts. Those two items are my guess as to why it was put into the ES collection rather than ACA.

Expert selection stones still qualify for their generous trade up policy and are in-house. Ask them to pull the couple that you’re shortlisting (And maybe a couple that they pick within your budget) and get an appointment to do a Blind Viewing. (They’ll just show them to you and not tell you what’s what. You pick the one your eyes like best. Win-win.)

Definitely make an appointment at Whiteflash to look at stones. Not only will you see beautiful diamonds, you will receive the benefit of some wonderful diamond education. They will help you decide your threshold for both color and clarity.

Now I see them!

I would have expected an extra facet on the report for the green ASET sliver, but no, there is no such mention. WF will know.

If I lived in Houston I would go to WF showroom. Make sure to tell them you were on here.

Thank you all for your replies and advice! I visited the WF showroom and really learned a lot and was able to see some of the diamonds referenced here.

Regarding the #2 "expert selection" .806 F/VS1 referenced above, I saw it in person and it looked amazing. However, it was just a tad smaller and at the bottom end of the size range that I am looking for, which is unfortunate since it is an excellent deal/value. The WF representative that I met with also said that it is an excellent "expert selection" and just likely barely missed the mark for A Cut Above.

I took a look at the A Cut Above .91 E SI1 $6,452 that crbl99 recommend in this thread and really liked it (see below):
https://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3955161.htm

I have only the follow-up questions since there seems to be new diamonds that are similar to the .91 above added. What are the primary differences between the .91 E SI1 and the below two? Which do you all recommend?

.93 E SI1 A Cut Above $6,594
https://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3929359.htm

.90 F VS2 A Cut Above $6,746.
https://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3997343.htm

I understand these are all pretty similar so I appreciate everyone's expertise! Hope you all enjoy the upcoming holidays!
