My girlfriend has chosen a very specific setting, that I can only get from one vendor.

My choices are:
1) ship a diamond to them and have them set it
2) choose one of their diamonds

Their prices seem to be reasonable, so I chose this diamond. My question is: Would y'all recommend another diamond, or is this one a reasonable choice for $4950?

What I'm looking for: J or better color, SI1 eye clean or better, 1.3 or bigger carat, ideal cut... and that it is as sparkly as possible. Price limit of around 5500.

Thanks so much in advance.

Steep in the pavilion, will result in light leakage. Avoid.

That pavilion angle will also encourage colour entrapment as well as leakage, not good in a J colour - I would advise passing on this diamond, you can do much better.

Thanks so much to both Stone Cold and Lorelei.

I do like the rocks that Stone Cold chose... Do others agree that the measurements look good on those two?

Does having a rock with good measurements usually correlate with the completed ring that the stone is set in appraising for more? Or is that more just a function of size of the diamond?

Thanks again.

Stone cold picked some good ones, as usual. I like the first one a little better.

The difference in measurements probably won''t affect the appraised value, but will make a big difference in how well the diamond performs.

I would like to see Idealscope images for both diamonds, you can request these from the vendor. Also there is a largeish cloud plotted on the first diamond's clarity plot. Although it is very unusual for a cloud to dull a diamond's brilliance in VS clarity grades, I would get JA's gemologist to check it out carefully should you decide to pursue this one.

Diamond price is a function of cut quality, color, clarity, and carat weight, but not in that order. So yes, a better cut diamond will cost more. So the appriasal should reflect this if it accurately reflects the value of the ring. Many supposed "appraisals" don''t accurately reflect the value of a ring, however, as they seem to be handed out with a ring by a jeweler in the interests of making the client feel good. "I paid $5000 and it appraised for $9000! I got a great deal!"

Stone Cold...

Thank you so much for your advice regarding my diamond purchase. I chose a diamond from the list you gave in this forum topic, purchased it, and it was gorgeous.

I showed it to the family, then boxed it up to ship it to the company that was going to make my engagement ring.

I have had the unfortunate experience of my diamond getting stolen somewhere in the Fed Ex shipping process.... it is now going through a claims process... We will see what happens, but it is a scary mess that has left me and my girlfriend heartbroken.

I need to purchase another diamond, with the same specs I listed before, so if you (or another pricescope member) had some rocks that you thought were a good buy, please let me know your suggestions.

Thanks again for all the help,
J
