Help please from the savvy flyers/travellers in the PS community!
When I cancelled my flights to Vancouver for May/June 2020, I opted for a credit note with Air Canada instead of a partial refund that is only about 25% of what I paid originally. Besides, I am unlikely to fly to Vancouver with another carrier except Air Canada.
Instead of making the trip to see my mum and brother towards the end of this year, I am contemplating going in February 2021 via Tucson
.
I tried to book the multi-city trip via Air Canada so as to use up my credit note (and was prepared to pay a bit more for the trip), with the itinerary of London>Vancouver>Tucson>Vancouver>London as Air Canada does not operate between Tucson and London.
The search via Air Canada for a multi-city trip returned a price of 6k+ GBP (yup, no joke) for flexible economy flights!!!
However, when I searched separately for return lowest economy flights for London/Vancouver, and Vancouver/Tucson via Denver, the combined total for both legs were much much less than 6k+ GBP!
I repeated the same exercise using Expedia and found similar results. In fact, slightly lower if I opted for one of the US carriers like Delta for the Vancouver/Tucson leg of the trip.
I would like some help on the following please:
Hope the above makes sense, and thanks for your help and advice in advance.

I would like some help on the following please:
- Is there any reason why I cannot make two separate booking via Air Canada, and not as one multi-city trip?
- Is there any reason why I cannot make one booking via Air Canada for the return flights for London/Vancouver, and then use Expedia for example to book a separate side trip between Vancouver/Tucson, for departing and returning to Vancouver when I am actually in Vancouver?
- I may not be able to use the full amount of my credit note if Air Canada does not allow me to book two separate flights in one transaction.
- I may need to contact Air Canada and find out what I can or cannot do with my credit note. So far they have not responded to another query of mine since I cancelled my flights nearly a week ago (no surprise there given the crazy circumstances at present).
- I may need to apply for an extra visa to travel between Canada and US, and shall make sure that is in place before my trip if required.
Hope the above makes sense, and thanks for your help and advice in advance.
