First off I know this said many times but I must repeat what a wonderful site and community this is...I can not describe how appreciative I am to have found this resource!

I like so many others on here have finally found the person I want to spend the rest of my life with and as such could seriously use some advice as I search for the perfect diamond. I feel I have done a sufficient job educating myself on diamonds (thanks in most part to pricescope) and have narrowed it down to reasonable range based on my budget. I have decided to use a local ring designer that will build the ring and set the stone for me. My girlfirend and I have been looking and decided that a pear shaped diamond looks best with her long slender fingers. The design I have developed with the jeweler calls for a 1.1-1.4 carat pear shaped diamond surrounded by a halo of small diamonds of approx .50 carat weight. The ring itself will be platinum with 3 diamonds down each side of similar size to those in the halo. I have no doubt the ring will be outstanding; however, the key is finding the perfect pear. The jeweler and I agree that the halo really requires a stone of at least 1.15 weight to not appear "swallowed up" and something in the range of 1.3-1.4 would be ideal.

So after exhausting the pricescope search engine I''ve found a few stones but one in particular I am very interested in. I have it on hold through James Allen and just received the idealscope image but need some help interpretting it. The idealscope image and GIA diamond specifications of the stone are:

Shape and Cutting Style: Pear Brilliant
Measurements: 9.54 x 6.14 x 3.82 mm (Ratio = 1.55)
Carat Weight: 1.30 carat
Color Grade: G
Clarity Grade: VS2
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Very Good
Flourescence: None
Table: 55%
Depth: 62.2%
Girdle: Slightly Thick - Thick (Faceted)
Flourescence: None
Culet: None

What do you think? Does this look like a good stone. Please feel free to be as critical as you can....I really appreciate any help you all can provide. Thanks so much!

Can you post a regular picture also?

EDIT - have you seen this table? The diamonds depth and table fall into class 1A ideal cut (soi does the ratio).
With fancy cuts you really have to go by the look of the stone. There is also this page that talks about fancy
cuts and ideal scope images even though it doesnt say much about pears.

Welcome!

Good luck on your hunt for a pear!

Thanks for the welcome! In response to your post, yes I have seen that table and it is actually how I arrived at this particular stone as my searches were based on the tables ideal parameters. I''ve also read that page on fancy idealscope images and like you said, it really doesn''t provide much help for a pear. I just requested some regular images and will post them if/when they send them but do you think there is anything else I can ask about this stone to determine if it is exceptional or at this point do you think that I just need to bite the bullet and purchase it with the 30 day return so that I can view it in person?

I''d want pics first. But that''s just me.. Fancy shapes are tough, so pics are very helpful.

Ditto on the pics, it looks to be a good shape, appears to be a bit of a bow tie so ask JA as to what extent it shows in reality. If you could post the actual pic of the diamond that would be very useful please. Also ask them if they can run a Sarin scan on the diamond to get the crown height.

I agree with Lorelei and all the nice ladies that have given you great advice... with a pear, its hard to assume a look without actually looking at it...
If you are showing your interest in purchasing, they should at least send you a couple of pics for you to see...

When i purchased mine, I had the GIA cert copy and plenty of pictures to get some sort of idea...

The ideal scope looks pretty good to me. There is definitly a bow-tie but it has a lot of red in it so in my opinion it should
be a pleasing bow-tie. There is some leakage along the rounded side of the stone but not sure how that should be
interepted (thats why we need to see some real pics). I personally dont have a problem with bow-ties as long as they
are reflecting light and there is a nice transition between the really faceted part of the stone (the pointed end of the stone)
and the bow-tie. Its a lovely shape so no problem there. Pears are so hard to evaluate...if the numbers look good and the
ideal scope image looks decent then the last test to pass is a look at the actual picture. I think it is promising! So, I'm waiting on the real pics!

It reminds me of my pear in shape which is my favourite type of shape to have in a pear, be good to see the pics!

I''ve requested the pics and should have them by tomorrow at the latest. I will post them as soon as I receive them so stay posted! Thanks for your help.

just a quick thread jack...Amethyste...how would you describe your bow tie? It looks pretty non-existent. It looks like
there are some larger facets on the outside where a regular bow-tie would be but in the center there is no evidence
of a bow tie. I wish you had an ideal scope of it so we could see what it looked like so next time someone is looking for
a nice pear we would have something to go by. If you do go for that reset could you consider getting an ideal scope
image? I think if would really help pear buyers out

! And, if you''re not sick of hearing it your pear is amazing!

Ok, done with tread jack...still waiting for pictures

Hello there Tyty

Thank you so much for the kind words about my pear... you are right, there is NO bow tie! Just little larger facets on the sides where the bow tie
would usually be. You are very observant :) I will get my diamond reset eventually, depends on the $$$. To get an ideal scope done, where would I need to go? i would hate to ship my ring to get this done somewhere else. When I am ready for a reset, I am driving my ring actually myself! ( NH to NYC isn't that far of a stretch ). I'd be curious how my pear would read/do on the ideal scope :)

Can you confirm with them that the image they sent you is also correct :)

Well, like I said the bow-tie is pretty obvious but it is bright. Do you have any other more real life
size photos? I think when they are blown up this large it makes the bow-tie look way bigger than
it is. So...IMHO I think this is a very pretty pear and worth ordering it to see if it speaks to you in
person. Like I said, bow-ties dont botter me (they do some people) as long as its an attractive
bow-tie.

So...my verdit is to order it. In my opinion, it is an attactive pear and will look even prettier in person.

I''m really sorry but it looks like both the image and the sarin report are for a different stone!

JA is currently requesting the correct ones and I will post them as soon as I receive them.

If that is the case, what is the status on the pear in the photo? It looks lovely.

I was just thinking that when you did get around to a reset you could ask whoever is doing it if they
have the equipment ( I wouldnt mail it anywhere either!!!). I got my pear about 11 years ago
before I knew anything about PS so just had to go with a visual also. If/when I ever do a reset
I am also going to try and get one. I''m thinking that they cant cost a whole lot but I''m not really
sure
33.gif
. It would just be nice if PS had lots of pics of pears with ideal scopes and/or
ASET images for those new buyers looking at pears.

BTW - I like your current setting but I know you might want something simpiler for everyday wear
sometime in the future!
