About 2 years ago I purchased a diamond with the help from everyone here. My diamond is a VS2 clarity. I would like to buy a loupe so I can identify my stone. My questions are:

!. Will I be able to see the inclusions in a VS2 with a 10x loupe or do I need a 20x.

2. The plot in my GIA cert says I only have a very few inclusions near the outside of my diamond (good I know). The plot identifies them as Feather, Twining Wisp, and Needle. Since there are so few and near the edge will I see them or be able to identify them.

Honestly I have not looked at many diamonds under a loupe. It's pretty clear to see if they are black inclusions or cloudy. I really would like the security of being able to identify my diamond since I might need to get it sized and don't really have a jeweler I know well.

Thanks

Diamonds are gradedfor clarity at 10x by the labs. You should be able to see your inclusions with that magnification. That said, I have a 20x loupe and that is my preference.

I tried to look for the VS1 inclusion in my EC using 10x and could not find it, however, I finally found it using 20x last night!

I am no expert by any means and I don't have 20/20 eyesight but just giving you my experience. I have an SI2 1.01 F RB with inclusions plotted on my GIA cert. My diamond is also inscribed on the girdle. I bought a 10x loupe and it took me probably two weeks of obsessively looking at it to find the feather inclusion, which is partly on the table so not hidden by a prong. I also could not find the cert inscription at first. I eventually spotted it but still can't read the numbers with a 10x.

So If I were to buy a loupe now, I'd go higher than a 10. I guess I should add that my eyes are 45 yrs old and I'm nearsighted, so take that into consideration. :geek:

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions. Since my eyes are a little older I have decided to get the 20 x. Now my only decision is which one. I will only be using it for personal use but want to be able to see what I am looking for. I also don't want to spend too much. Any suggestions?

I heard that you should get a black one, as not to distort the colors. Don't know if it's true, but I did. When I bought my 10x loupe, I read somewhere that 20x is more difficult to use, since you can see only such a small part of object through it, and this led me to buy a 10x. But since there are people here with 20x loupes, how do you find this statement?

I don't find anything on my small 0.5 carat VVS2, but then again the plot on the AGS cert only shows inclusions on the pavilion. I can however read the cert number on the griddle on good lighting and with some difficulty, but I have an excellent eyesight :)

Edit: I can find inclusions on some of my coloured stones easily on a 10x loupe. But this thread has got my thinking maybe I should get a 20x as well :)

I have the same as Gypsy, but 10x. I find it very handy.

I bought mine at a jewellery trade show in HK, and has 30x magnification when using the 10x and 20x lenses together.

It has a LED light as well as an UV light to detect fluorescence.

Can't remember how much I paid for it, however, it was certainly cheaper that what I could find in high street shops for ones with single magnification without lights.

I have a 10x and a 20x. I usually look at the stone with the 10x first then move to the 20x. The 20x did take some getting used to but now that I have it I can't imagine looking at any stone without it.
