Hey All-

I've been busy searching for a round diamond, ~0.75ct, F-G (could dip down into H potentially), VS1-VS2, Excellent/Ideal cut, sym, polish. could also probably drop a little on the polish.

I've found these, which seem pretty good to me, but figured I'd check and see what the experts have to say. I'm trying to keep the price for the stone under ~$4k. I know I could drop lower in color & clarity, but from the stones I've looked at in person, these are the specs that caught my eye. With that being said...on to the stones:

(Seems to be a bit of leakage under the table compared to the others)

(Really liked this one, but seems to have gotten snatched up during my search)

Thanks!

Would skip the 0.714 F VS2 ES - while I actually don't think the slight leakage (light escaping out the back of the stone through the pavilion rather than being returned to your eyes) will be detrimental to appearance IRL at all, I think you are paying a premium for a branded stone, and the stone should be mind-clean as well as eyeclean to warrant the premium, and that one doesn't make the cut for me.

The other two WF stones look nice - identical in spread, so they'll look the same size. Prefer the F VS2 - don't like paying extra for unnecessarily high clarity and don't care that it's not H&A, of course if you want a H&A stone the G is the clear choice. ACA and ES lines have the same generous upgrade/buyback/trade-in policies so that is not of concern.

I am super nitpicky so I would request hearts photo retake on the BGD, but I would expect the retake to come out fine (as in, I expect the small issues are due to photography, not asymmetries in the actual stone). Otherwise looks nice as well. Pricier than the WF ACA of the same size/colour/clarity though, and same issue for me of paying needlessly for VS1 clarity. BGD also has generous policies on their H&A line.

Does one vendor have setting you prefer? All of them are close enough in price and stats that this would most likely be the deciding factor for me.

Thanks Yssie - Never purchased a diamond, so any help is appreciated! It doesn't necessarily need to be a H&A diamond...just want something that has a lot of light response and play.

I'm thinking I might have to go custom for the e-ring. I've been looking for something similar to this:
ring_1.png

Looking for something with clean lines and sleek. would probably prefer 4 prongs to 6, and it may need some slight modifications to mate well with a wedding band.

if anyone has seen something close to this, I'd also be interested in hearing about it!

Slight leakage under table in this one, clear in the IS (0.714)
http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-2632187.htm

No leaking in this one though (0.741)
http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-2428248.htm

The last 0.71 G VS2 ACA also looks fine, hearts and IS are fine. This one's my pick - cheapest, same size as the others, H&A, G colour in this size will look perfectly white once set, not paying for unncessarily high clarity.

The setting looks really pretty - would look great as a 4prong too, if you go the custom route

Thanks again Yssie! I see what you mean now about the IS image for the .714.

The selection did seem to be a little sparse to me. A local jeweler I was working with pretty much had the same problem trying to track down diamonds in that range.

Yeah.. if you drop to H SI1 the inventory gets quite a bit larger, but obviously you don't have to do that!

Perhaps call a couple of vendors and see if they have new stock they haven't yet posted/when new stuff is expected? You have some lovely choices in this thread but if you don't love them for whatever reason it can't hurt to have vendors keeping an eye out for you. Fair warning that prices are likely to go up if you sit on it too long though

What is the cause of leakage in this 0.714 stone? The proportions seem to be almost perfect.

I agree with Yssie that any of the remaining 3 after eliminating the .71 F VS2 would be fine. I'd go with the one with the largest diameter unless one or the other vendor has a setting you like. Either may be able to add diamonds to the shank of a plain solitaire without going totally custom, so you should ask that when you call.

Numbers are averaged around 8 sections of diamond and reported on the AGS report, averaged then rounded then reported on the GIA report. So without a full scan, pics, etc. we don't know what sorts of ranges go into those averaged (rounded) numbers. It's a problem w/ buying just by the report - without more info the numbers can be masking quite a bit of valuable info.

AGS printed ASET map is a simulation - we don't know about simulation/scanning/printing error, so best to have an actual photo to confirm with.

I just bought a near identical BGD 0.75ct G VS1 for an e-ring and I was blown away - looked awesome compared to the diamonds at my jeweler of choice (they even admitted that it is stunning when I brought it in). Very good customer service, it came with an H&A viewer (if you'd like to check out the hearts for yourself before setting). I say go for it and don't forget to ask for the PriceScope discount!

If you like those kind of flowy lines on the setting, definitely check out Mark Morrell's platinum work. That ring you posted reminds me of his work a bit. He was a pleasure to work with! I actually had a diamond similar size to what you're looking at (.85) in his Torchiere and it looked fantastic! The diamond and setting have since parted ways unfortunately, but it was a killer combo! The diamond is being upgraded and the setting is off on consignment. Sigh.. haha.

Best of luck whatever you end up with!

Crown is 34.9 and pav is 40.9. The stone would have been better with a shallower pav of, say, 40.7.

Hey all-

So I've decided to go with BGD, since I'm working on a custom ring with them. I had it narrowed down to two stones...:

http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamond/diamond-detail/?product_id=AGS-104051366010

http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamond/diamond-detail/?product_id=AGS-9408702

...but then of course I bumped the range on my specs, just for fun, and now have two more that may have creeped into the picture.

http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamond/diamond-detail/?product_id=AGS-104051366005

http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamond/diamond-detail/?product_id=AGS-104052377009

They are a bit more expensive, and pushing my price range, but the color jump is fairly significant. Would it be worth it to jump to one of the E's from the G's? Will it be noticeable at all when set? Any other specs that jump out as setting one stone apart from the others?

P.S. The last stone I posted is really new, but if its looking like a winner, I'd request all the images.

I purchased a 1 ct. G SI2 H&A from BGD. To my novice eyes I do not notice any tint and it is in a white gold micro pave setting. The only way to tell if the jump in color is 'worth it' to you is to view a G and an E and see if you can tell the difference. With my trusty eyes it is not, your eyes may tell you something else.

I can see the difference between a loose F & G pretty well, but in a setting I don't think that it would be an issue. Mainly trying to decide if E VS2 is worth it over G VS1 for a slight premium. I think I would prefer paying for higher color to jump to colorless than staying in the VS range, but it is slightly high for my budget. But if it could potentially make a difference, or if something else stands out, then I'd be willing to put together the additional $.

I personally would stick with the G (and I have a D colored pear). When not viewing side-by-side a well cut G will face up
very white.

I love the setting you showed as an example. But, I prefer 6 prong b/c it makes the stone look rounder and I think that seems more cohesive for that setting, but you will work it out I'm sure!!!!!!!
