Hi Everyone,

My girlfriend and I have been shopping for an engagement ring. We found this one at a small independent store. Its total weight is 1.75 carats. The center stone is .75 and has a platnium band. We were told the stones are G and "VS". They have not been certified. The jeweler is asking $7500, but offered to lower his price to $7100 today.

We are novices and have educated ourselves to the best of our ability. The reason I''m posting is because we''re unsure about the price and because of the behavior of the jeweler.

They did not appear to be very interested in selling the ring to us when we visited their store while home on leave. We asked to see if they could create a white gold ring for us identical to this one, but they were very apathetic when we asked. We e-mailed the store and did not receive a reply after one week. I contacted them today and they said the price of the ring was firm at 7500, so I thanked them for their time and hung up. They have since called twice and left messages as well as sent an e-mail offering the ring at $7100. He told us that the diamonds were not certified, but that the supplier could get certification. From this information, can you tell us if this is a fair price or if we should run while we still can?

Thank you in advance for your advice.

Because the diamonds are not certified the ''G'' and ''VS'' grades they are giving you are simply their opinion. The jeweler''s odd behavior would be a huge red flag for me. The recommended jewelers on this site could recreate this ring for you with certified diamonds, you would know what you are getting, not because they said so but because an independent lab said so.
The design of this ring is lovely, but IMO the prongs are too big and detract from the diamonds'' beauty. A vendor like Whiteflash or ERD could make a much more delicate setting for you.

Okay,

I''m not an expert, but I just did a Pricescope diamond search and that price does seem high. You could get the diamonds from a PS vendor for around 4K. Another 3K for the setting seems high to me. Plus, I do agree with the previous poster that the prongs appear to detract from the diamonds. I know that rings tend to photograph heavy, but those prongs are large. Actually, I agree with everything the previous poster said. Good luck!

Ack! Not only are the giant angry prongs eating the diamonds alive, but at least two of the three stone seem to be set crooked too.

Not to mention the lack of certification and the lack of responsiveness from the jewelry store. Um, NO.

I would definitely get the stones from a PS vendor and have a setting made that is more... fluid... (is that the word I'm looking for?). You know what I mean.

Thank you to those who have replied so far, you''re absolutely helping us with your input. And for those who still have something to say, please feel free add your opinions!

Thanks!
