Hello guys! I was wondering if you guys could help me with some questions and assurances with a princess cut diamond. I'm just about ready to buy an engagement ring for my girlfriend and I don't want to mess this up since it's one of the most important purchases in a life!

I've been doing a lot of research and I think I comprehend a lot of stuff about the 4 C's but still have many questions. From my understanding, in a Princess Cut diamond you can't see the color of D-E-F diamonds and they recommend you stick in the G-H range? I also understand that GIA doesn't grade the cut of princess cuts. The ones I've been looking at are graded "very good" by the seller's standards.

When it comes to polish and symmetry, does that help it sparkle the higher grade you get? The one's I'm looking at are GIA - Excellent or AGSL- ID for polish and symmerty. Is it worth the money, or would it be better to drop down a grade to Very Good.

Also, the Ritani ring I'm looking at has sidestones with a minimum color of H. Say I found a nice diamond with a color of DEF or G, would it look out of place having a better color then the sidestones?

Last question, do the amount of facets have anything to do with the sparkle? While looking at reports I noticed some diamonds have a lot more chevrons, how does this play into the diamond?

Example:

I'm looking at diamonds directly from Ritani. They don't set other diamonds in the rings so that pretty much limits me to their inventory. For reference this is the ring I'm looking to set the diamond in:

Any advice and help would greatly be appreciated

I also understand that GIA doesn't grade the cut of princess cuts. The ones I've been looking at are graded "very good" by the seller's standards.I would not go below an H. You probably should stick to seller's Excellent grade (or whatever they call their
highest grade.) They do have pictures correct? I would not buy a princess without pictures. You also need aset images to check
on light return.

usually say VG is good enough but I think the really well cut stones usually do have Excellent Polish and Symmetry. Not sure how
picky you are.

it shouldnt be a problem.

Last question, do the amount of facets have anything to do with the sparkle? While looking at reports I noticed some diamonds have a lot more chevrons, how does this play into the diamond? This is why you need images. 4 and 5 chevrons will have smaller facating
pattern and smaller flashes of light (more). 3 Chevrons will have bigger, bolder flashes of light. I prefer 3 but its a personal preference.

3 chevrons

4 chevrons

5 chevrons
I cant even find a 5 right now. They are pretty rare

You can use a vendor that carries Ritani settings.

You could stick to AGS000 princess cut stones that are already checked for excellent light return.
Whiteflash carries Ritani settings and also AGS000 ACA princess cut stones.

Thanks! I would love to buy from whiteflash, and although they do carry Ritani, they don't have that specific band I posted above

I went to a reputable jewelry store this morning to see some actual examples in person. I was very surprised when he showed me 2 princess cuts and asked me which one was the bigger carrot. The one I picked ended up being a smaller carrot...had no idea about the table measurements and how some larger carrots will look smaller face up as the weight is on the bottom :o

I was also surprised when he told me one was a G and the other and I color. They both looked identical to me and I couldn't see any color in natural light. They were both "Very Good" polish/symmetry and not excellent, and they still sparkled like crazy...so I guess that put my mind to ease.

What is your budget for the stone? WF should also be able to order you the specific setting, it's worth an email!

Did you check with Whiteflash to see if they can get you that Ritani setting? I recently ordered a diamond from Whiteflash and chose a Tacori setting that wasn't posted/pictured on the Whiteflash website. I just asked if they could get it for me and there was no problem at all. Good luck!

Re: Help with 1.0-1.25 Princess Cut, First time Diamond buye

Oh Cool! I wasn't aware Whiteflash could order the setting. I'll give them a call and see!

My budget is $5500-$6500 for the stone

Wow! Those are beautiful! And getting much more for the price compared to Ritani diamonds.

Thanks! That page has been a huge help.

That I Color princess you posted looks beautiful and is a great price. Do think you that diamond based of the given photo would face up colorless? I can't really see any color in it from the photo except the reflection coming off it
