HELP! White Gold vs. Platinum

I am trying to decide between white gold and platinum and need the final word. My boyfriend is on a limited budget so if its alll the same, I would just tell him to go with white gold. I don''t care about the "status" of platinum...BUT I want it to look nice, so if white gold won''t hold up over the years, then I''ll insist on platinum.

Thoughts? Also - what about palladium? I''ve heard a lot about that recently but don''t know anyone that has a ring with that metal.

One last thing....I saw a flat cathedral setting (3.5 mm) on www.adiamor.com in platinum that was $675 and then the very same setting at www.uniondiamond.com in platinum for $1500. Are there differences in platinum? How could one be so much cheaper than the rest?

Just something to consider - do you currently have any WG rings that you wear on a daily basis? I had several WG rings, but did not wear them consistantly on daily basis, so I was suprised when I got my wedding set at how quickly they turned yellow and needed re-plating.

Seems most people don't have a problem with it, but I guess my body chemistry just does not do well with WG as an everyday metal! Over the course of one year, I had to have them replated 3 times. I didn't like the hassle, so recently upgraded to a platinum set.

That price you saw on adimor for a flat plat setting is a good price IMO. I have WG and for the most part it is fine and I am happy with it. Unfortunately with WG you will have to get it replated w/ Rhodium every once in a while when the ring starts to turn a little yellow.

I have had both white gold and platinum, and I prefer white gold. I love the weight that platinum has, but I do not care for the patina it aquires after time. White gold will need replating, but in the years that I have worn WG, it is like once a year with daily wear, my sister has had to have hers done more frequently (maybe every six months). If your BF is on a tight budget and you really don't *have* to have platinum, then I would go with WG. I had a palladium set at one time, but I had a hard time finding a jeweler to work on it...that may have changed since it is becoming more popular.

jarbatz, I''m having my ring setting done as we speak, and will be doing white gold. I was going to do platinum, but my jeweler feels that my stone will be very secure in white gold based on how the ring will be designed, which was my main concern (stone will be sitting low, and it''s kind of like a half-bezel setting). Plus, I don''t mind the savings that doing white gold will represent, and I don''t mind having to have it replated once in a while. I think each metal has its pros and cons so hopefully white gold will be the right decision for me.

I plan on posting pictures of the ring as soon as I get it (I''m so excited!), and to report back on how I feel about white gold and how it holds up because this is a question that comes up often on this forum...

X1, not 1X. I didn''t know about it until PS either. It''s white gold that (supposedly) doesn''t need Rhodium Coating. Made by Stullers. Also check out Precise White Gold, same concept patented by a different company.

You say that your emphasis is on the look. Platinum will actually dull very quickly, and you will have to get it polished more often.

14K is harder. If you are a careful person that doesn''t bang your hands too often, then either karat white gold should be fine.

I personally went for palladium. You just have to make sure your jeweler knows what he is doing.

White gold is yellow gold mixed with palladium (spelling).

The reason platinum has gone up so much recently is because of the yellow gold price (the stuff that holds up most of the western worlds banks (US sub-price market woes)).

Palladium is going up in price because more people are interested in it because of the increasing price in yellow gold and platinum.

The topic has been discussed to death, so I won''t go on about my opinion (you''ll likely see it in the other threads somewhere anyway). But if you''re worried about 14K gold lasting forever, then be sure to get a setting with a nice, sturdy shank. That''s what I did. I got my setting from adiamor.com, by the way, and have had nothing but good things to say about the quality (and price!! - half of what others cost!).
