Maybe move the thread over to colored stones forum you might get more advice?

I purchased a natural yellow diamond and setting from David at Diamonds by Lauren. It''s a RHR for me, but would also be wonderful for an Ering. Try his site, there are quite a few completed rings as well as loose stones.

He was great to work with, very helpful and responsive. I highly recommend him.

HI:

Any chance you could be more specific with your preferences--especially for shape and color saturation? Here is a great place to see some eye candy!!!!

i can also second david at diamonds by lauren, you can find tons of examples for that kind of budget! Diamonds By Lauren

That''s a nice, healthy budget - you are sure to be able to find really great (size and quality wise) for that! What shape are you drawn to?

Good luck!

Most yellow diamonds are fancy shapes, so check out the reading under the "Knowledge" tab at the top of the page, and click on the article under "Fancy Shapes". The article has links to cut charts.

Also, for colored stones, there is more importance to showing good color, and less on maximizing light return.

Many fancy colour diamonds are cut into radiant shapes as it these can show the colour to its best advantage. The colour is EVERYTHING when buying a fancy colour stone, so that is what to focus on, as for the cut and appearance of the diamond that is down to personal preference. Also look for a diamond with the coloured diamond report from GIA.

HI Bianca,

Great advice from Lorelei- I won't consider any other lab besides GIA when looking at Natural Yellow Diamonds.

In terms of cut, there's different goals for the cutter of yellow diamonds, as opposed to colorless.

You asked about Princess and Radiant.
IN the smaller sizes ( say, under .50ct) princess cuts are more common that radiant cut, if we're talking about yellow diamonds. This is actually true for colorless diamonds as well.
Once we get to larger natural yellow diamonds, princess cuts are far more rare.

In terms of the info available about cut- not everyone agrees on what is best.
There are many different styles of cutting. This is true of we're talking about colorless- or fancy colors.
The reason some of the charts can be misleading is that what one chart says is bad, another may say is good.

Also there's a far smaller pool of diamonds to choose from, in fancy colors.
If one is shopping for a 1.00 G/SI1, you can get any table/depth combo you want ( pretty much)
For this reason, each fancy colored stone must be looked at on it's own merits.

Here's a great stone to use as an example:
It's a Fancy Yellow Cushion.
The depth is 64.6%, and the table is 76%.
Many diamond people agree that 76% is quite large for the table on a cushion- yet there was NO problem with the way this stone looked in person.

thanks guys for the advice

and David i was looking at this rock myself on your site

;)

Shimmer, I just had to chime in and say I LOVE the ring you suggested! It''s a stunner!

That''s great advice from all the previous posters including Lorelei and Rockdiamond.

As Lorelei and Rockdiamond have said colour is the key for a fancy yellow diamond and as such words or grades are not really enough to describe them - its best to see the diamond in person if at all possible.
To illustrate how colour/shade affects looks/price here is a picture of just 3 fancy yellow square radiant diamonds:

Bianca, the first yellow diamond ring that you linked to looks lovely. Very soft, golden yellow hue. (And, the cushion David posted later is to die for; I''ll take two, please)! Anyway, I''m sure you''ve figured it out by now, but, although the the center stone in the ring that you linked to is light yellow in color, it is not graded by GIA to be a "fancy" color yellow. Instead, it lives right next door as a "Y-Z" colored diamond. This is good news, if you are happy with the color, because you will save quite a bit of money compared to a stone one hop down on the grading scale that comes in at "fancy light yellow."

Also, as was mentioned, even within a specific GIA grading, "yellow" can be many shades. For what it is worth, if you can figure out what, exactly, it is about "yellow" that you like, you will have an easier time finding your perfect match. For example, do you prefer a soft, golden look (easy to find in the end-of-the-alphabet light yellows and fancy lights) or is that quality of color too "calm" for you? Perhaps, a screaming, hot, definitely-yellow (as in dandelion, canary, number-two pencil...)that would be more in the fancy intense, fancy vivid or fancy deep range would be more to your liking? Warning... the more intense or vivid the color, the more you WILL pay, LOL! Also, if there is any sort of modifier in the color, like brown, green, maybe orange, and etc., it will impact price.

Do you prefer hard shapes, like a traditional radiant, or softer shapes, like a cushion?

Fancy colored diamonds are VERY unique, and it IS all about the color. There is no magic formula or special scanner to help here. In this case, beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. That''s why, for me, when dealing with colored stones on the internet, finding and using a trusted vendor, who won''t be happy until YOU are happy, is a tremendous help.

Good luck with your search... sounds like a blast!
