Just like everyone says... long time lurker, first time poster...

I have been to every place in Atlanta that sells diamonds... TWICE!

I went to a place that was recommended by a buddy & got a great offer. He calls me today to tell me that he had his stone appraised by two different people & they both said it is no where close to what this jeweler told him it was. My issue is that he offered me the following.... he is now letting his lawyer talk to the guy from this point on. That is how bad it is!

1.21 CT EGL cert Princess Cut
5.95 x 5.93 x 4.05
Color E Cut SI1
68% Table
68% Depth
set in a Ritani platinum Endless Love setting that has the pave stones around it... ALL THIS FOR $6500.

Based off deals I have seen, this seems to be a great one. But after my buddy got the news back on his ring, I am beggining to second guess if my deal is with a legit stone. I know you cant really fake the Ritani piece. Is this deal too good to be true?

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated... and I plan to ask to see the certificate tomorrow. All of the specs he gave me were off of a "EGL" card he had wrapped up with the stone. I did not think to ask and see it...

YOU GUYS HAVE AN AMAZING SITE & I CAN NOT THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR ITS INSIGHT!

Thanks, Mike

I don''t know much about princess specs (others will chime in on that) but my advise to you is to get it APPRAISED with your friend, from a 3rd party appraisal service, and don''t give him the money until you know what you''re getting.

And 6500 sounds kind of high....but like I said, I don''t know princess cuts.

Well you COULD certainly fake the Ritani, but it is more likely that the stone is just sub par. I think it would be more hassle than it is worth to fake it. Is it with a halo or without? If without a halo, that setting can be had for under $2,000, so it wouldn't be too off. Also, it is really heavy right? Because Ritani does make that setting in WG too...

I would personally get it appraised by an INDEPENDENT appraiser ASAP. Then you can take action if need be. EGL is notorious for being a bit off on the color and clarity, which is why it is essential to get a third party opinion of your ring.

Hang on - have I got this right? Your buddy recommended a jeweler from which he also bought a stone. He got his appraised and it looks like it was mis-represented by the jeweler that he recommended to you.

You''re now looking at a setting and stone from the same jeweler that your friend is in litigation with? Is that right? Sound like not a good idea to me, regardless of the deal being offered. I always run when I hear the word deal.

I personally think you should run!!

There are lots of princess cut diamonds and Ritani settings, why take your chance with someone you KNOW has sold diamonds that don''t appraise as advertised!

well now, lets slow down a bit. all we know is that the guy is selling EGL certified diamonds, calls himself a jeweler (but it doesn't mean he himself is really qualified to determine diamond color and clarity any better than myself) and that the diamond that may have been certified was not up to the specs listed. We all know that EGL is sometimes off, so just becuase his friend got a poorly graded EGL and the jeweler didn't know about it, and now the friend is taking action does not mean that the Jeweler is bad. I am usually the first one to walk if I don't like something about the sales people or buisness, but I think we might be jumping the gun on this one--Especially as I don't see any other good options being listed yet, as he said that this one is by far the cheapest he has seen.

Nontheless, given only what I have heard I would not give him my money before having it appraised and looking online for similar deals.

With the comments said, how off can EGL be? I know it is all subjective, but are they that far off from a GIA or AGS graded stone? I find it kind of amazing with all of the info on the web, that are still retailers trying to sell stones that are not graded at all. I have seen so many stones at this point that if someone showed up at my door with something that looked nice, I would probably buy it.

I plan on getting it double checked after I verify the certificate. Any recommendations on whom to take it to in the Atlanta area?

Trust me, after I spoke with my buddy again tonight, I am second guessing everything this guy has told me.
I will say this, he has been in business for quite a while and has a "who''s who" clent list. The area he is in is where all of the country clubs are and the average customer has a whole lot more money than I do.

IF this stone is as advertised, do you think it is a good deal. I know the ring sells for $2300 by itself, so that would put that stone at about $4200. I have looked online through the pricescope search & have not seen anything that matches those specs and is that close to the price.

Maybe the cut on this stone is odd and most of the guys advertising on here do not buy stones like this one. Thoughts? I have seen some really odd sized and shaped stones but have been able to stay away from them thanks to the education I have recieved from this site... example, the first stone I almost bought had an 86% depth with a 68% table... not so good...

THANKS AGAIN TO EVERYONE!
