First of all, thanks to everyone who participates in these forums. It''s been an education and real pleasure reading it these past few weeks.

I''m looking for advice and help on these two round H&A diamonds below. I''d like to get the extra carat size in candidate #2, but I''m a little worried about the cut. The HCA score is 2.3 if I round the pavillion angle up to 41.1, but 1.6 if I round down to 41.0. I''ve read that going over 41 on the pavillion angle can really affect the performance, but this barely peeks over by .06 degrees, so it seems right on the border. The idealscope image doesn''t show any obvious problem, but perhaps I am not looking at it right. There''s no doubt candidate #1 has better polish and it seems to have better symmetry too, by the look of the H&A pictures.

I''m willing to take a slightly lesser cut to get the greater size, but I don''t want to sacrifice too much performance or pay a premium for an ideal cut that really isn''t. Let me know what you think! And thanks in advance.

Candidate #1

Candidate #2

Carat: 1.3
Color: G
Clarity: VS2
GIA cut grade: Excellent
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Excellent
Depth: 60.97%

Post the Ideal Scopes. But if 2 is the carat weight you're looking for, it seems like it would be fine.

edit: while something like 40.9 would be better, I think, you say you would take a hit in cut to get more weight, I think it is a good choice.

Crown angle: 34.17
Pavillion angle: 41.06
is a perfectly kicken combo.

As is:
Crown angle: 34.53
Pavillion angle: 40.98

If they were 35/41 then it wouldnt be as great.

IS images would tell more of the story and heart images if its being sold as h&a

So does anyone disagree and think I should be concerned at all about the cut of candidate #2?

The first one has a little too much painting for my liking.

The second is a near ideal cut.

Are you specificaly looking for a canadian diamond?

Not necessarily Canadian, but I''m looking for a diamond for which the specific source mine can be identified (and guaranteed to some extent). That really limited my options, and led me eventually to these two stones.

Originally, I was looking for something slightly bigger. Anyway, I''m leaning toward candidate #2 now, but I''m still very eager to hear what people think of the cut and how much it would affect performance.

If they''re a) Canadian, and b) from Jonathan''s shop, then (a/eh, again), what''s the worst they could be?

Good for you to be thinking about these things.

But, if you haven''t, check this out. Maybe you can update us as to the status of availability.

As they say in buddhism (considering spiritual development)...better not to start. But, having started, better to finish. If you''re inclined to want to keep your hands clean...all the more reason to consider instead getting them dirty.

Good for you to be looking for a two fer (ethics & ideal performance). Maybe Jonathan will update us, too?

Hi Ira,

I''m all for the the Rappaport initiative and improving conditions in developing countries. But I think it''s a separate issue from the conflict diamond issue, which I''m hoping to address by creating a market incentive for the industry to invest in systems to keep track of the origin of diamonds.

As for improving conditions, I haven''t been able to learn much about how a consumer can help on that front yet. But someone suggsted that I make a donation to an NGO doing good in these countries to accompany the diamond purchase. It sounded like a wonderful idea, and that''s my plan now.

So what do you think of the cut on the second diamond?
