I am ASTOUNDED by the great advice and kindness in this forum--I''m postively addicted!! I''ve been trying to learn how to scrutinize a grading report and I''m wondering if someone could look at these links and advise which are acceptable inclusions:

I found an SI2 that appears to my unskilled eye to be fairly "eye-clean": http://www.bluenile.com/diamonds_details.asp?pid=LD00453326&query=2&filter_id=0

How does that compare to this SI1 that doesn''t appear to have equally unextreme inclusions?

Thankyouthankyouthankyou!!!!!!!

Gala,

I''m a newbie here too (and someone correct me if I''m wrong!) but I believe "eye-clean" means you see no visible inclusions in the diamond. Blue Nile only lists sample pictures, so unless you''ve seen them in person, I guess there''s no way to know if they''re actually eye clean or not at SI1 or SI2.

Hi Gala

Welcome to PS!!! Many people here will call the vendor and ask them to eye ball the stone for them to know just how eye clean the stone is. Yes that is a sample pic and will not tell you much. HTH and Good luck.

With the exception of durability issues, and it goes without saying that they should be disclosed and they should bother everyone...

The only acceptable inclusions are those acceptable to the buyer...that can be anything from NO inclusions to those which can be seen with the unaided eye, and MAY/DO represent durability issues...it just depends on YOU!

Look at lots of stones to get a "feeling" for what you can tolerate, both visually and mentally...some folks can''t stand the idea that there are certain types/positions of inclusions, or ANY inclusions, present in their stone EVEN though they are not visible!

OK, OK, I confess I''m one of "VS1 and better" nut cases

, but I don''t let that get in the way of what others want!

Yes I am that way also. It''s a bad thing for me. But not all SI 1''s are the same and there are many out there that are eye clean. You have been given some great advice from diamond expert, go see a bunch of stones and see what your level of comfort is with the whole clarity thing. Many people here have lovely eye clean SI stones, but they are not created equal. Also what is eye clean to some may not be for others.

Thanks everyone for their responses! I was actually not looking at the picture so much as the GIA report that has the diagram of the inclusions. I''m wondering if there''s any way to at least rule out some stones based on the types of inclusions? Thanks again--you are all so nice and I LOVE this site!!!!!

I do not know that the report is going to tell you much. I can plainly see the inclusions on my report but not in person. I have spent hours looking for the inclusions on my diamond with a 10X loupe and have only gotten brief glances of it.

Granted, the clouds listed on your first choice look rather large but I think the only to really tell if you can see them is to look at the stone in person.

A few years ago, I owned an .49 H SI2. (I was briefly engaged to a college boyfriend!) I now own an 1.03 I VS1. (When I upgraded men I inadvertently upgraded diamonds as well! hehe...j/k, of course!!!)

There is a major difference between these two stones, but I''m certain that the difference can all be attributed to the cut quality. This is an ideal cut stone, while the old one was probably "good" at best. I can''t see any difference in color, and I see no difference in clarity with my naked eye. I never realized how important cut was until my fiance surprised me with this baby! He went to a good jeweler (Isaac at Dimend Scaasi in Chicago, in case anyone is interested!) who educated him on the importance of cut and showed him how minor differences in color and clarity can be.
