I am new to Pricescope and diamond buying. I''ve started looking for an engagement diamond to buy for my girlfriend. Been doing some research and really been educated.

I''ve been presented with a diamond. It''s a gem scan.........so all I got is the basic 4 c''s

color - e
cut - good
carat - 1.14
clarity - i1

I saw it. Noticed the inclusion with the loop. But didn''t look at it close enough to see if u can see it with the visible eye. Now I''m hesitant on the i1. Not sure if it''s a good choice. My GF isn''t very knowledgeable about diamonds, so she might not care. But it''s getting to me. On top of it all, he wants 7000 CAD for it.............or about 6500 USD. Sounds a bit pricy on doing more research on the net. Then all the references to gem scan(m) is really getting to me. Now I didn''t leave a deposit or anything but I need to make a choice.

Some advice would be great.

Are these online dealers reputable? Is GIA the best? What''s a standard clarity for diamonds?

(SORRY ABOUT ALL THE QUESTIONS)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx

I wouldn't consider I1 clarity for an engagement ring, personally. I prefer VS clarity, but many like SI1 because of the price break.

Besides the excellent information on this site about the 4C's, check out Good Old Gold's section on the 4 C's to see pictures of what the various size and color grades mean. Plus, you only want to look at AGS0 ideal cut or GIA Excellent cut stones. The cut is the most important thing in the beauty of a diamond!

(Many good choices for stones in the 1 ct. range, here are a few more:

Since you''re in Canada you need to factor in the VAT and other taxes when comparing prices.

There is legislation there relevant to eliminating or lowering taxes on incoming diamonds, but not sure of the exact status of that yet.

If you''re near a US border and want to take the risk of sneaking it over after picking it up in the US, that is an option but you need to consider the risks, even though chances are you''ll be able to bring it in un-noticed.

What shape is this diamond? I wouldn''t dismiss an I1, but I would at that price.

I have a gemscan certed diamond that I bought last October in Toronto, where are you located and shopping for this ring/??

I am too Canadian and I went through every single store in Ontario (well most) and was frustrated. Look around here and give GOG or WF a tried.

I use GOG and althrough the drive to Sarnia is father than Buffalo, I think it''s worth it.

You are paying too much for that diamond. If you want to compare prices to what we get here, ask them for GIA Exellent cut certificates. They probably want 2,000 more for the same stone you mentioned above
