I''m thinking of having my boyfriend buy my engagement ring from a neighbor''s friend whose marriage ended recently. It comes with GIA documentation and is beautiful. It''s a radiant cut diamond ring with trapezoid side stones on a pave setting.

Center stone is a 2.4 carat brilliant radiant- VS-1, color I, measurements: 8.57 X 6.91 X 4.73mm which is foreign to me! Two trapezoids, modified brilliant .75 ct, VS-1, color H. And the setting consists of 76 round full cut diamonds weighing another 1.1 cts. So I guess total carat weight is around 4.25

Two things worry me. I didn''t want to go below color G, but will the VS1 clarity help there? I also hear that a GIA certified I color could really be more like a G-H...

The documentation also states the center stone to have "fluorescence moderate blue". What does this mean???

The seller says the ring appraised for $36,000. What would be a fair offer to make? I''m clueless!! Any advice would be soooo appreciated!!! Thanks in advance for any replies!

I cannot give you an estimate on an offer but it does sound promising. I would just be curious about the cut on that ring. Cut is king as you will read in the forum and the better the cut the less color will show. Also the flourescence makes it whiter so that will help it face up white. If you do a search above you will find that alot of people on here perfer I and J color diamonds and that they become a bargain for the buyer. If she will let you I would take it to an independent appraiser and have them tell you what it is worth and what the cut is or maybe you can get that from the certificate and post it on here. Good luck

Radiants tend to show quite a bit of color and an I will not be icy white but may still be pretty depending on your preference. The clarity will not help with the color however. Have you seen it? Does it look white enough for you?

The flouro should make no difference whatsoever. If you were to hold the diamond under a black light, you would see it glow fainly blue but it will not show that under other lighting conditions.

The cut is the information we need the most right now. GIA grading is good. The I colour and VS1 rating should be accurate for the radiant and the H VS1 rating for the trapezoids. Get ALL the information on the certs for the 3 stones and post it here please.

The clarity will not help the stone look whiter. My concern is that radiants are cut to show body colour, hence many yellow diamonds are cut as radiants to help accentuate the yellow. So an I graded radiant MIGHT be too warm for you. Have you seen the stone? Is the colour all right for you? The plus is the MB fluorescence. This will help the diamond look a wee bit whiter under certain light conditions, but not by a whole lot.
