Hi everybody,

Hope you can help me -

I recently inherited a j colored i1 diamond, 1.34ct and it looks little cloudy. I gave it a clean using jewelry cleaner and it has helped but not too much, I mean it is a i1 clarity diamond after all.

I would like to re-set it but not sure what sort of setting will enhance its clarity and tone down the tint of the stone. All suggestions welcome because I have seen some of the most spectacular blings in this forum!

Thank you

I think I would contact Brian Gavin Diamonds and let them take a look at it and see what the recutting options are. It is best to have all the information before deciding if a recut or leaving it be will be the best option. I would lean towards recutting if possible because it will allow you to possibly decrease the inclusions and increase the cut quality which will help the diamond face up whiter. I think it is about $350/ct...I am sure the experts will chime in and correct the pricing if I am wrong.

Without a recut, I would probably set it in a pendant. It will still be able to sparkle, get wear, and attention without close enough observation to point out the inclusions.

Thank you for your suggestion, recutting was definitely something I seriously considered but the sentimental value of this stone makes me not want to alter it in anyway!

What about settings? Do you think a halo setting will give the illusion of clarity and brilliance?

It depends on the inclusions and their locations. Are any of them prongable? Can you post pics for us?

Do you have your heart set on a ring or would you be interested in wearing it as a pendent?

I would like a ring as I am not a necklace person (can't cope with things around my neck)

There are three little carbon spots in the middle of the diamond, and a few feathers which can be seen in the right light. Also there is a slight chip on the girdle (from a previous setting I suspect) it is old so it has it's flaws and probably not worth very much, hence why I would like it in a good setting that will bring life to it again.

Tried to take photos but they all came up terrible!

I like the idea of having the diamond at least looked at to possibly recut. I am not sure of a setting that would enhance a diamond that looks cloudy and has visual inclusions. If the diamond is too sentimental to you to have it recut, just set it in whatever setting that you like. Perhaps something with a vintage feel since the diamond is older? Gabriel & Co has some beautiful vintage-inspired settings:

If it's really cloudy it's not worth recutting. Can you post some pics?

Hi guys,

Thanks so much for all your advise.

I have tried in vain to take a photo of the diamond however none of the flaw are coming up and it looks super dull. So I went on to James Allen and found one closest to mine.

Very much liking the antique setting idea, especially a halo. Do you think an antique halo style would work for this stone?

I wouldn't spend the money to recut it. Yes, if you really think you will wear it, but a nice affordable antique halo. Gabriel and Company has some cost effective ones.
