I''m just about to purchase a rock for my special someone - and I''ve had a friend teach me about the basics of looking through the ideal and heart/arrow scope.

I''ve narrowed down my choices to two rocks available at James Allen and was wondering which one is better? I understand there are trade-offs between clarity and color (one is better in one, the other is better in the other).

The two under selection are:

1.26 G-VVS2

1.22 F-VS1
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/F-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1201135.asp

When I look at the H&A scope, the 1.22 hearts and arrows themselves look better, but there appears to be some more defined splits in the hearts.

I''m having a tough time deciding between the two - but I''m really looking for the one that will dazzle/shine the most. Any help would be great. Thanks!

Making the links clickable and then will look.

You have selected two very nice stones, either would be a great choice. At this level the trade-off of color and clarity means little to a viewer as there would not be anything noticeable with the naked eye. The hearts images are different due to the length of the lower girdle facets, but both are good.

Just my opinion - but as between color and clarity, I''d err on the side of color. When I made my big purchase three months ago, I was able to examine several stones in person, and I was very surpised at how little the clarity grade was detectable. To my naked eye, there was no detectable difference between stones graded up to VS2 - in fact, my eventual purchase was a VS2. Even with a loupe, it was very difficult to spot the inclusions from the plotting diagram.

Differences in color, by contrast, were evident from the naked eye, especially when lined up side-by-side on a white paper display. How different were the colors? Probably not distinguishable when viewed on a hand in isolation (meaning, one stone at a time), but the point is, I could tell - and I couldn''t tell with clarity.

Hope this helps.
