Help re: pear depth vs table numbers

Hi -

I found a pear shape whose length to width (and other characteristics) I really like; however, its depth is 63.8% and table is 57%. Are these two numbers, taken together, = to a diamond''s spread? And if so (or not,) does the 63.8 depth mean its not so great?

No, just depth and table. Spread is the measurement in MM which will tell you how large the diamond faces up. Also the matter of depth in fancy shapes is more complex than rounds, as fancies can hold weight in other ways, hence depth does not always relate to face up size.

Does the diamond have a GIA report or other?

but if you find a pear you love which doesn't quite match up to the suggested numbers don't worry too much, your own eyes and tastes are the important thing. Have you seen the diamond in person in a store or is it online? If online, if you could ask for photos and an ASET image that would be very useful. Also if you could get the crown height that would also be good to know.

Also if you haven't seen the pear in person, check with the seller if it shows much of a bow tie. This is a dark area which looks just like a bow tie that elongated fancy shapes can show, it is possible to sometimes minimize these as some shapes will show this more than others, but sometimes you can't eliminate them entirely.

It isn't possible to tell much by depth and table, suffice to say the diamond might be worth further investigation at this stage.

I agree with Lorelei. With pears you need to forget the numbers and use your eyes. I have a pear cut that defies all numbers BUT it''s perfect (for me!). Numbers also won''t tell you if a bow tie is present. They may suggest there''s one or not but at the end of the day, there''s absolutely no subsitute than your eyes.

I''m attaching a pic of the pear and the certificate. (I have another certificate (from another stone) which has more details...this one seems "short" to me. The store told me the girdle is medium to very thick and the culet was none.

The numbers sound reasonably good for a pear shape. The image of the diamond shows it to be a nice looking stone. You need to look in person. All pear shapes represent one or more compromises in light return which are compensated by the pleasing outline of the pear cut. It is a very personal choice.

I also like it. It has a very pleasing shape. Any chances of getting more clearer pics? It does not appear
to have the standard bow-tie. It does have an area in the middle but doesnt really look like the standard
bow-tie effect that most pears have. If it were me and I was considering ordering it to see I would like
additional pics (hopefully clearer).
