After my first post and your advice a few weeks ago re buying side stones (.75 each) for a three stone ring, I decided to forgo the online option and go b&m. I went to a large diamond dealer/jeweler in my area, wher they eyed my center diamond (1.20) as an I/J, which is true according to my thirteen year old appraisal from IGI. They set two uncertified I/J (supposedly) stones in the setting and then i came in with my center solataire for them to set. I watched them set it.

The side stones are visibly more yellow in color than the center stone. I stupidly left but told them that I wasn''t completely pleased and would consider whether I needed to have them changed. I called as soon as I got home and said I wanted the stones changed. The diamond buyer said she would make it right. I am scheduled to go in tomorrow.

Need your advice. Do they have a right to charge me more since they gave me a price based on stones that would match my center stone? I am planning on going in and being nice, because I think that is the best way, but note sure. I know they will get it right, but I would like them to do it at no cost to me.

I charged it on my amex so am not worried if it becomes a large issue. I am hoping it won''t.

Please give me your advice. TIA.

return them and start fresh online. If the stones are uncerted they could be much lower than I/J and when they get into the J/K/L range this is often visibly warm. If you want a more accurate description of color stick with GIA or AGS.

If your diamond is I/J according to the IGI cert then the side stones with the I/J color should match just right. If they are yellow than they are definitely lower color. I would give them one more chance to make it right but I would want them to show the stones before setting so no more issues later on. If you don''t feel right go with a different vendor.

When there is no certificate some jewelers tends to exaggerate their stones'' color and clarity few grades up. Not a nice thing to do!

Thank you. I definitely made a mistake not looking at the color before they set my stone. I just looked at the receipt and I can return the diamonds within seven days, so I feel better. That said, I am going to give them another chance.

I love my ring and it is truly the ring I should be wearing at this stage in my life. I just need to get this "little" matter settled.
