I got the diamond I''ve wanted, now I''m stuck on the setting. I HATE thick bands. They eat up the size of my fingers and make my finger dissapear under the metal.

I found a cute micropave ring that are 1.2mm in width (there were two of them together in the display, so I''m wondering how DO you wear something like this? with your e-ring??). I wanted something like this but all the e-ring settings start somewhere around 2.5mm. The jeweler says it is possible to set my 1.5ct stone with a four prong setting on one of the rings, but I''m having some serious doubts of the integrity of the setting and the weight of the stone. Does anyone know any rules of thumb about stone size and band size? I need to call him by Monday to change my order before it goes to the shop. Please help...I''m having major anxiety over it!

happy to help but some photos etc would help????

Four prong settings can work with larger stones. My 1.77 was reset from a 6 prong to a 4 prong, and I like it much better because now you can see more of the stone. Or are you saying that the 4 prong setting you're looking at automatically comes with a wider band? My band is wider, I think 3 mm, but it suits me. Another option for you would be to have a plain solitaire band and flank either side with a thin pave WB. I guess I'm not totally sure what you're asking. I know mine could have been set on a thinner band, but I wasn't looking at pave bands.

1.2 mm is crazy thin, and most well known designers won''t go anywhere close to that thin. Check out Ritani, they have some super thin (1.7mm) rings that are taller, so they are still strong. I have one and I love it.

I''d be hesitant to have my engagement stone on such a thin shank...

1.2 would be way to thin for me personally to feel comfortable, especially a pave ring which means there were holes in it before the diamonds. you run a very high risk of the ring just bending b/c plat. will bend (if the ring is plat.) also, i''d want enough metal to hold those stones in, even well done high quality pave can be subject to a stone popping out. Like neatfreak said, most designers will not go below 2mm and Ritani is one of the only brands I''ve heard of that does 1.7-1.9 and still produces a super high quality product. Also, is your jeweler suggesting you add the head or alter and exsisting band to turn it into an e-ring setting? I really wouldn''t feel comfortable with that at all. You didn''t mention the price but please do keep in mind that the quality of pave greatly varies from extremely well done, to very, very poor and like most things, you get what you pay for.

Just wanted to say that 2.5mm IS thin! I wouldn''t consider going under 2mm, especially if you are considering pave.

I don''t have pictures, as I didn''t think to take any and the ring is at the jewelers! However, this is the shank they have it on, and I am pretty sure they put my round brilliant on this one based on the description in the paperwork and since I know that they use stuller settings....

So his plan was to take the four prong setting off of this one and put it on the 1.2mm pave band...

Yeah, this is my major hesitation with it and I kept saying it at the jeweler. He''s not charging a whole lot either, so I''m worried. I told him that I didn''t care how much it cost, but my major concern was with the workmanship. I felt like he just rushed us in and out. So now I feel screwed because I bought a stone and a setting that he told us to come in and upgrade after a month when he got the fall stock in. So we went in and it was not a good experience! I want to continue with the place I bought my stone at, but now I''m feeling stressed and that I have to go elsewhere!

still keeping my vote the same that I wouldn''t do it. If you don''t mind sharing what is the cost to do all this?

Not sure if this helps you (?) but I''m having a custom ering setting made by Mark at ERD. Originally I''d asked for a ~2mm band but when Mark put it in the computer (the one that generates the grid & rendering), he said I''d need a cathedral if i wanted to go that thin or it wld be a risk to the center stone. Alternately, he said i cld go up to 2.5mm width & lose the cathedral. My center stone is a 2.5ct princess. I wld think 1.2mm might be a bit too thin for a 1.5ct round unless there''s a cathedral...?

The cost of the band $600
$70 for the labor

Yeah...now that I look at it closely, it doesn''t sit well with me anymore...

I was hoping to get this sort of consultation when I asked about it, but the jeweler insisted on it. I feel a bit duped now because he had helped us out with the stone and everything and was friendly and told us that the setting he was putting it in was one that I could use as a temporary one and he would work with us to find one I wanted. Now I feel like screaming because I can''t trust him anymore. I''m calling tomorrow to pickup my ring as is. I''m still stuck on trying to find a nice setting. I''m starting to think I want something like Mark Morrell, but I hesitate sending my useless ring (btw, did I mention there was a problem with the jeweler doing the sizing incorrectly so I can''t even wear it??) to a place hundreds of miles away...

Have you looked at Mark Morrell's work? He doesn't specialize in super thin, pave' type settings. You might want to consider Leon Mege. Of course, there are other good designers that may have a semimount that suits your needs, without going custom.

Yes, I have. Here, let me start from the beginning. I initially wanted a solitaire, no adornment or anything. I had a really hard time finding a setting I liked...I looked at Tacori, Scott Kay, Vera Wang, you name it, I tried it. Then, just for the heck of it, I went to Tiffany''s and realized that I didn''t like settings because I didn''t like the CZ that was put in the middle of it for the display. So then, I found a stone at this jeweler and thought ok, I''m ok with a simple solitaire setting. Then the ring came and things didn''t fit and honestly, a die cut mounting is really UGLY and the stone looked just OK in it. I imagine it''s like having a fancy dress made out of polyester instead of silk. Somthing just isn''t right about it. So then, I went back to looking for those super adorned pave settings, and finally just thought I have to settle for something. So that is how I ended up here. It just doesn''t seem meant to be for all those rings, so I have to try one more time now with the solitaire since it was the original plan.
