Hi,

I need a little assistance please as I have the opportunity to purchase a ring with the princess cut diamond I have been searching for however there is an issue.

The main diamond is:
1.48ct Princess (6.30x6.10)
H colour
P1 clarity
Entire ring is just over 2ct tw

Comments made on the evaluation state:
' Diamond has been damaged in one corner and has cleaved away at one side of the stone from the girdle to pavilion facets'

Is this really bad?
What are the chances of the diamond falling apart if I was to have it re set?
Even if I was to keep the setting as is, is it worth considering at the right price? The asking price is around $8k 'buy it now'

Thanks

Cindy

don't buy it . what is P1? is it it GIA certified? in any case buying a damaged stone isn't worth it .

For that price you can buy a not broken stone. There are very serious concerns with the above- will it break more with time? Who certified the stone? What is a P1 clarity- doesn't sound good. Also, there is no information about the cut- on top of being broken it could be (likely is) dead and lifeless/not sparkly. If you're set on a 1.5 carat james allen has some options as well with well priced settings.

I am sorry but I would not buy this diamond at any price. The damage is extensive and I expect that there is significant impact on the sparkle of the diamond. P1 is the equivalent of I1 clarity. In this case, it is likely that the damage is the grade setter.

Yep that can be bad. I have broken a couple of diamonds before if you have one with that sort of damage along a cleavage plane all you need do is bump it the wrong way and the whole thing could potentially smash further into a number of pieces. The stone is a P1 which is an GIA I1 or I2 anyway so full of inclusions. Go for a smaller stone as recommended on the other post you have that is well cut. Well cut stones face up (its a trick they play on the eye) bigger in the end because they have edge to edge brightness, sparkle and fire.

The only way I would buy a stone with this type of damage would be if it was super cheap as in a 1/4 of the price you are quoting to get re-polished and even then I would steer clear of it because of the lower clarity....

Think of it like this larger and cheaper are frequently not better. Buying an eyeclean well cut diamond will be more of a lifetime investment than one with issues that no-one else wants to buy.

Really bad...princess corners are susceptible to cracking. Do not buy...get a new stone without issues. $8k is way to much
for a cracked stone!

Once again thank you to everyone for your replies!
Difficult to make these decisions when you have no idea about the subject however I am becoming more educated every day!!!!

Cheers

$8K??.. I wouldn't even pay $800 for the stone... :knockout:

Hi Cindy
I agree with all the others - DO NOT BUY!!!! I know you want to get that ring on your finger but you don't want to regret buying something like this.

Please find out your budget (stone then setting) and let us help you! I know its a big purchase and scary too but I would call Diamonds International head office, then call Danny at The Diamond Centre (Albert St Brisbane City). Tell them what you want and see what they have. Im happy to find out for you if you like. What state are you in?

Lauren

Hi Lauren,

Thanks for that, I really really want my ring but not at the expense of buying something that is not right.
I have the number for Diamonds International I got it from the web after you mentioned their sale, I will call them soon.

I will also try Danny, I am in Melbourne.... We are still working on plans for the wedding so the ring budget is a bit up in the air at the moment as is my partner, I am trying to convince him about paying for the ring/diamond I really want and he doesn't want to pay as much as I do... ugh...

I will call Diamonds International and see how I go.

You have been a great help Lauren, thanks
