Hi everyone,

I''ve been lurking on this forum for a few weeks now reading through a lot of the threads, there''s a LOT of great info and really helpful people here. So...I have a quick question..

I''m living in NYC at the moment but as I''m from the UK I have no idea about the local jewelry stores in the city. I''ve checked out Tiffany and have an idea of what I can get there, but I know it''s a trade off - huge increase in price vs her knowing it''s a Tiffany ring.

Could anyone recommend one of the stores here that would a good place for me to start to look at alternatives?

One of the rings at Tiffany was $4200 and is:

0.45 ct
D
VS1

I''m happy with it, although I know that for $4k I could get a bigger ring from somewhere else.

Please....I need the help!!

HI! Well there are many places to choose from but in my opinion, I''d go with GOG (Good Old Gold). Jonathan there will help you get more bang for your buck and it''ll be great quality. I got a .85 I SI1 cushette diamond for 2450.00 there, and it''s gorgess! So for 4,000 I''m sure you can do great! It all just depends on what you want. I''d go with an eye clean SI1 because then you can get a larger stone for your money. I would also go with a H-I color stone because there are white in my eyes, but it all depends on your gal. She might be more color sensitive. Here is the link to GOG website. They have tonz of different shapes to choose from and I hear the store is great. The service is outstanding as well. Here is the link!

I hope this helps!

Thanks Stephanie. Unfortunately I don''t have a car out here, so Long Island is a bit out of the way for me. I''ve looked through their site and it''s been a really good guide, but store-wise I''d really prefer to stick to Manhattan.

i''d go to Mark T at www.engagementringsdirect.com. he''s located right in the NY diamond district and although he''s known around here for his amazing eye for cushion shaped diamonds, I''d trust him for a round or any other shape as well. Do call though because you''ll need to set up and appointment.

I''m also from the city, here''s a highly regarded PS vendor and he''s in the city. 47th st I believe.

Call, make and appointment and go see MARK!!!!

Why don't you make an appointment to see Mark Turnowski at Engagement Rings Direct on 47th? He helps loads of Pricescopers find wonderful stones and his prices are completely fair. He's really delightful to talk to and has a great eye.

ETA - Haah! I see we all came out of the woodwork to show some love for Mark T at the same time

Just bought my stone from Mark on Monday, and trust me, he has a great eye!! Call him up!! Jonathan is great too, but without a car it makes it a little challenging... Keep us posted!

Great thanks. I work in midtown so getting to Mark won''t be a problem, I can start hassling him today

Yet another newbie question...I''m loosely planning on proposing in a month''s time...is that going to be enough time to choose a stone and setting and get it made? I''m assuming that if Mark has a stone in his store that I like, then that''s a major hurdle out of the way?

If it''s not enough time, then yes I''m an idiot. It was only recently when I started reading about it all that I realized how over-priced Tiffanys is.

Thanks all, you''ve been very very helpful

You dont need a car to get to LI from NYC. You just jump on a train. I think Jon will even pick you up at the station if you ask him.

NY Magazine also has a guide to local jewelers who sell wedding rings.

Wedding Jeweler Guide

Some of the places are flashy and expensive, and some are smaller neighborhood places (like my favorite, Roslyn, on 73 & Columbus).
I do recommend the Diamond District, however, if money is an issue at all - so ERD seems to be the place to go!

Good luck!

i recommend "id jewelry online" coz i''m currently working with them now. they''re located in the diamond district so getting there won''t be a problem. just tell them you found them thru pricescope.

they''re fairly new to ps so i don''t know if you can find a lot of reviews about them. nonetheless, i think they''re great. so far i have no complaints.
