I just purchased the following diamond:

http://www.whiteflash.com/diamonds/diamond_details.aspx?idno=906742

I just realized that this diamond has ''feather'' inclusions on the edges of the diamond according to the AGS certificate. I did not receive the diamond yet but it may already be shipped. Could anyone tell me, based on the pictures, if this will be a major concern? Or should I take it to an appraiser/specialist and have them examine it once I receive the diamond.

Any other comments or concerns I should know about are greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your help!

an SI1 is not supposed to be structurally insecure.

WF will not sell a structurally insecure stone (unless there''s some kind of mistake?)

What can I do on my end to ensure that this stone is not structurally insecure?

you, technically, shouldn''t have to worry about it. but it''s always a good idea to let an appraiser make sure it''s the right stone and all that stuff.

How much can I expect to pay to have it appraised?

I''ve been in your same position, and I know how nerve-wracking it can be to make a purchase that''s so significant financially and emotionally, so I want to reassure you that you have no reason for worry on this stone.

First and foremost, Brian is super discrimating in choosing which stones will qualify for his A Cut Above brand; he would never jeopardize the brand integrity by allowing a stone that might have structural concerns.

Beyond that reassurance, though, it might help to remember what a diamond endures during the cutting process. During bruting (the process by which the diamond is shaped into round), the stone is subject to intense pressure as it''s hammered/rubbed against another diamond on a high speed lathe. It withstands white-hot temperatures as it''s polished on a diamond wheel spinning at many thousands of RPMs during polishing.

By the time a diamond reaches the consumer, it''s already survived the most extreme conditions it likely ever will and will be fairly safe under normal wear conditions.

With that reassurance, though, I did also check on the status of your stone and it has not yet shipped, so Brian the Cutter would be more than happy to examine your stone and speak with you tomorrow if it would put you at ease. If you''d like to do this, just give a call tomorrow to set up an phone appointment with him.
