Shopping for an ering and found a couple of diamonds in the LA diamond district that I was wondering if people here in the forum could give me their opinion on:

1)
1.85 G SI1 Ex Ex Ex
depth 62.3%
table 55%
Crown 35.5 deg
Pav 40.6 deg
thin to med girdle
no culet
$17500

2)
2.03 H SI1 Ex cut, VG sym & polish
Depth 61.9%
Table 58%
Crown 33.5
Pav 41.4
girdle thin to sl thick
no culet
$19500

I ran both through the HCA and the second one came out with lousy numbers (HCA 4)... How is that possible with a GIA cut grading of excellent???

I''m also looking at another diamond from a friend''s friend''s friend who is in the diamond business:
1.90 H VS2 Cut VG, Pol VG, Sym VG
Depth 61.2%
Table 59%
crown 34
Pav 41
girdle - verty thin, to sl thick
no culet
$15400 (he''s offering it to me basically at cost)

This last one has a GIA cut grade of very good but has a HCA that is lower than that of a GIA excellent cut.... I''m confused as to what is a more accurate determination of cut?

I think I''m leaning more towards the first diamond because it is triple excellent grade and had a great HCA number. What do you all think of the price?

Thanks for all your help, this forum is an absolutely great resource!

Hi Max and welcome!

The first diamond would be my pick, out of the three you posted. As to GIA Excellent cut grade, the range can be broad, so it is best to evaluate each stone on it's own merits. You can check out your pricing using the search tool above, bear in mind that these prices are for online diamonds and that the prices may be a bit lower typically than brick and mortar stores.

Also bear in mind that a lower HCA score doesn't mean one diamond is better than another. It is an elimination tool which basically tells you that a diamond scoring below 2 ( generally) is worth further consideration / evaluation. It shouldn't be used for selection or comparing diamonds, just to round up those which you may want to consider buying/ not buying.

Have you seen these diamonds, checked them out for 'eyecleanliness' and they pass muster?

Thanks Lorelei,

yes I did see them in person and they are "eyeclean" and actually fairly clean under 10x loupe.
