Hi everyone :wavey:

Several years back I was pretty active around here, and recently have made my way back. It's great to see how the community has grown while retaining it family-like vibe!

I recently got a very generous bonus, and am looking for a little (self)congratualtory present to celebrate. A little background, I spent the first 28 years of my life in schools of one sort or another, eventually earning an advanced degree in a highly technical field. Having finally completed that process, I immediately took a left turn, and got a job in a different sector doing something very different from what I had trained to do. I had a great time, learned more than I thought was possible, and eventually realized that my degree was in my first love, and it was time to head back in that direction...

Flash forward slightly, and a friend mentions an open position over lunch that sounds perfect. They'd been looking to hire internally, but have just opened a nationwide search so, 1. I'm eligible to apply but 2. I'm up against the rest of the country/world! Well this time everything fell in my favor, and I landed the job which perfectly combines my technical training and all the other skills I'd amassed since. This is really the first step in my career, a fantastic opportunity, and something I truly believe in. It's also been grueling, the work has expanded 3x since I started this fall, I spend hours every week begging for money from donors or writing grants, and have a minimal support staff so far. But I love it, so it was wonderful to find out I was getting a bonus in appreciation of what I've done in the very short time I've been around.

I'm really very pragmatic not one to go out spending, my christmas and birthday money almost always goes into the pot for general finances and the most I usually do is get myself something nice for my birthday, or spend part of a check on a nice lunch or new nail polish.

But this time I feel like celebrating, and would like a little token to remind me of all I've accomplished in the last year.

Sooo, I've come up with three superfluous, somewhat overpriced, pretty sparklies to soak up some of my bonus (up to 2K) and am looking for help narrowing the field. Without further ado, the contenders are:

5 stone sapphire and diamond ring. This is lovely in the photos, and similar to one a colleague of mine has that I covet mightily.
Cons: Mel's tends to be a little over priced, and it looks like one of the diamonds is round rather than a cushion, and I don't generally wear yellow gold (but think I could make an exception).

Cartier Trinity black ceramic. I don't know why I love this so much, but I do. I like the trinity look, but don't love yellow or rose gold on my skin tone, and think the black is very chic. I haven't seen this in person, but will try to do so this weekend.
Cons: Seriously just a luxury item, and breaks my personal bais against wearing branded items.

Neither! Save up for your dream ring! I've always wanted a 3.3mmish blue sapphire french cut eternity band like this lovely from Singlestone. I have a 2.2mm carre cut one that I adore, but it just isn't quite enough oomph. 2k won't get me what I want, but I could theoretically hold out a bit longer....

So, any thoughts? Has anyone bought from Mel's Antiques before? Or seen a similar ring elsewhere? Any Cartier owners who want to share pics :naughty: I'm torn, and itchy for a new sparklie

What size ring do you wear?

The Cartier ceramic ring is VERY cool --- I love it!

I have nothing against name-brands, as long as it's well-made and worth it...some pieces aren't, but in my opinion a lot of Cartier pieces are.

Sorry for the big pix and the non-existent manicure, but here's my right-hand ring that I absolutely LOVE! (disregard the engagement ring).

Hi,

If you don't buy jewelry very often and are hoping to make this a special treat, I would save/look for your dream ring. I don't know what the price of the Cartier ring is and I'm not opposed to spending more for a name brand, I just have a difficult time spending a couple thousand on a piece that didn't have diamonds... but that is just me!

Congrats on your job and your bonus!

Rosebloom-I wear a 6 or 6.25

Malbec- very pretty! I really like the love collection too, and kind if feel like the trinity ring is so iconic, it's worth getting the real thing.

MC-I buy a lot of colored stones and gradually am setting them, but 1k is usually my upper bound on cost. The 5 stone is 1700, the Cartier is about 1500 IIRC, the sapph band would be 3-5 k depending on the final size. I have the same hesitation about paying so much for a piece without stones, but I haven't seen anything else like the ceramic Cartier.

Go with 1 or 2. Personally I've been hungering for a Cartier trinity ring since I first tried one on. It's visually beautiful and versatile, very professional looking, and as a bonus... you can play with it should a meeting start to get boring! I haven't seen the ceramic version before, but it looks stunning in the photo! I also like the five-stone you found. It has a nice substantial look to it, and I suspect you wouldn't tire of looking at it or wearing it.

The eternity ring is lovely, but I have a personal bias towards more substantial pieces to celebrate commemorate professional accomplishments.

Hi Mercoledi! Glad to see you back!

First, congratulations on your new position. That's awesome news!

I like all three rings but I'd probably go with #1. I love the diamond and sapphire combo, but that's my preference. My 2nd choice is to save until you have enough to purchase your dream ring. The Cartier ring is very pretty (and different -- I've never seen it in black), but I'd worry that the branding may bother you at some point or the silver and black combo might not appeal to you down the road. I may be wrong about that one but it's what came to mind, so I thought I'd throw it out there.

Hi, Mercoledi! I vote for getting your dream ring, because, a) it is satisfying to fulfill dreams, and, b) french cuts are the best. I actually know one under 2K in the width you want - any chance you wear a 6 3/4?

ETA - had posted the link, but thought better vis-a-vis lurkers. If you want the deets, just say the word.

VRBeauty- I agree, I didn't really like the trinity until I saw it 'in action' several times, and now I might be hooked. I'm trying to get over to Cartier tomorrow or this weekend to see the wg/black ceramic in person. I'm not crazy about the fact that it's engraved with Cartier, but I've never noticed the engraving on anyone else, so I'm anxious to see how obvious it is on.

Zoe- Hi! How've you been? As much as I like the look of the first one, I'm getting the feeling that the one round amongst so many cushions might always bother me, and while I could eventually swap it out, I'm trying not to take on any new projects right now. I might take that one out of the running, for now anyway.

Circe- Thanks for your vote! 6 3/4 is probably just barely too big, but I'd love to see it anyway. I've been trolling ebay/rubylane/etc for years, but it's hard to find sapphires in a good color, and even harder to find french cuts, there are a ton of rounds, baguettes, square/carre cuts, but so few frenchies!

So I think it's either the trinity or saving up for the sapph band (which could probably happen later this year). Hopefully my local Cartier will have what I'm looking for, and if I either love it or hate it, decision made!

Thanks so much everyone, it's crazy how much it helps to talk these things through. I really appreciate it!

Dude, don't I know it - I spent more than a year trolling to find the perfect one. And then I wound up with two on the same day! Ill probably be keeping an eye out for a sapphire one myself sooner or later ... but in the meantime, voila! If you're in the ballpark - like, 6.5 - sizing pads could probably work with this design. http://www.ebay.com/itm/121005169098?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Circe- thank you, that's lovely, but not quite the heft I'm hoping for. I actually saw several in person sometime in the last two years that were close to what I want. They were in a little New England estate jewelry shop, but now I can't for the life of me recall which darling little town it was in!

I think I've also settled on the Cartier, provided I like it in person. I got great news last week that just builds on my sense of achievement in this job, and I think justifies the luxury outlay. I tried to go on Friday, but they close at 6!

I'm bumping this in case Enerchi or canuk-gal might see this since both have or have tried on the ceramic trinity...

I would wait and get the dream ring.
