I've come to realize that I really need some unbiased help picking a diamond. I hope someone out there can assist!

Budget - $15,000 We are planning on financing part of it through Synchrony bank.

Carat/Cut/Clarity - the biggest size ;), but without sacrificing quality.

Color - that's been a bit tricky for me. I actually already did an in-store preview, but rejected the diamond because of some weird darkening that happened under certain lighting. This particular diamond was H color, IF clarity, Ideal cut, EX/EX, A1 down the board, and 1.1, but I just couldn't get past what it did even though it was VERY pretty. I've never experienced anything like that before, nor do I understand it either. I just want a diamond that doesn't turn gray/dark, so I'll leave the color choices to the professional here on this forum. And, I don't even know if color had anything to do with it, or some other factors that made it do what it did. Anyway, I would go I if it faced up a pretty white that I do know. I guess I color or better maybe?

I believe I get one more free in-store preview. This next diamond I pick really needs to be the winner.

Thanks SO VERY MUCH for any help in helping me find my dream  diamond!!

Do you have to go though ritani because of the financing or do you want to because of the in store preview? Or just the setting?

Yes, to both actually.

I believe any online site that deals with Synchrony bank we do qualify for though.

i ask because whiteflash sells ritani too, i do not know what kind of financing they use though- so for now we'll stick to ritani.

Were you able to view the diamond in different lighting situations, or just under the showroom lights? I've noticed that the lights make my diamond look weird -- and it looks much better outside in the shade. The color of the diamond shouldn't have anything to do with it.

This could either be a problem with the cut of the diamond (which can't be diagnosed without more information than you have provided above), or it could be normal behavior for a well-cut diamond, depending on the lighting conditions.

For example, see the following thread:

Hi - I was in that store for 2 1/2 hours looking at this stone. Yep, I took that stone outside, everywhere they let me actually, and it was only in certain (in the store) that it really did the "like night and day" changing color thing. Thank you for replying!

That is exactly what the Ritani rep said. Because it was of exceptional quality, a well-cut diamond will reflect all colors behind it. Will all quality diamonds do this? Is it something I need to just get used to seeing in a good diamond? Thx!!

Yes, the pendant all the way. It was like it went from one extreme to the next in appearance to that "grayish" darkening.

Yeah. I think it was the cut. The pendent was a stone I bought that hit all the "cheat sheet" numbers for a good stone but it didn't have good brilliance. Can you post the numbers or gia number of the stone you had originally purchased?

I actually had several links that I've been trying to share, but I must be posting wrong. Here's the link to the "almost purchased" diamond. Thanks a bunch!! :) http://www.ritani.com/diamonds/round-diamond-1-83-Carat-H-color-GIA-certified/D-1VQR2S

These next 3 links were recommendations by the Ritani rep.

well, I sure can't find those posts, so I'm sorry if redundant. The price tag on the "almost purchased" diamond was up there, and after being somewhat disappointed, I thought I'd better lower the budget. Way too much $ not to be completely happy. I'm working now on copying over the links to some other Ritani possibilities... :)

That one comes back as HCA=1.1. But there are subtle ineractions between the crown/pavilion angles in certain regimes, and even factors like lower girdle fact length can influence the appearnce of the diamond. That's why Idealscope images are typically recommended to make final evaluations after it has been confrimed that HCA<2. Now, some of the experts here, if they find this thread, may be able to give you an explanation for the darkening based on just the numbers available in the GIA report.

P.S. Sorry that you lost your post. One trick I use when composing long posts is to copy the entire post into Notepad before I click Submit. That way, if something goes wrong, I still have the text saved.

thanks, I will definitely copy/save first. Just when I think I've found the one.... Even if the numbers come back excellent, there's still the chance the diamond will turns out to be not so good. You sound very knowledgeable, and I'm pretty far from it. LOL This Idealscope image, is it something I can request from Ritani? If not, how do I obtain one of a diamond I'm interested in? I'm excited to make this happen. I'm keeping the faith, and I so hope I find the one!
