Long time lurker, first time poster here.

My boyfriend and I''ve been shopping online and in stores and have gone though pages and pages of helpful information on this forum. We''re hoping that we can get some guidance from you all.

I''m an engineer and prefer the simple bold designs instead of the populardainty intricate designs. It has made the search for the ''perfect'' ring a little difficult. The closest design we could find that had the look that I wanted was by an in-house designer with Robbins Brothers. The two times that we went there to see the ring in person, we were taken aback by their unprofessional sales people. (more on that below)

I''m hoping some of you have seen a design similar to this one or perhaps know where I can find other simple and unique designs. What I like about it specifically is that the parts holding the center stone are minimal and it has the two tiny diamonds on the side. I''m not a fan of prongs (and highly prone to snagging on things). The diamond that we hope to put at the center would be a square radiant or a princess (instead of the round in the picture).

Also, would it be possible to have this custom made? Do custom designers frown upon duplicating another design? This one from Robbins has a fine "netting" engraved on the inside for no apparent reason other than to gather dirt and excess hand lotion. I would have it made with a completely smooth band. Would it be worth it? The ring as it is from Robbins is $495 for 18K WG.

---- And now for my Robbins Brothers story
The ring I liked was featured on the front of their web page and is usually the generically featured ring on the side panels. We went in to see it in person and the gentleman who offered to help us didn''t know which ring we were talking about and tried to show me other designs I had no interest in. Once he found out we really only wanted to see it in person and wasn''t prepared to buy, he was even more useless.

We decided to give them a second chance and revisited a couple of weeks later. This sales gentleman, upon discovering we really wanted to try the ring, separated my boyfriend and I and took him into a separate room for "guy talk". Turns out this guy talk was 45 minutes of the salesman trying to convince my boyfriend to talk me into financing my own engagement ring.

He even had a story about how his house was bought on his wife''s good credit and he paid the bills so it was actually him buying the house. And something about this day-and-age where women pay for things.

I''d really rather not go back.

sorry to hear about your bad experience, that setting reminds me of a tension setting though (if you take away the small section under the stone)
have you considered designs by gelin & abaci or steven kretchmer?

I would go custom, it''s not as expensive as you would think. That way you get all the features you want!

Sorry about your chain store experience!

Have you looked at the Sholdt designs?

Sholdt Vashon r432-1P

This one seems perfect for you!

Sorry about that crazy experience!

here''s a photo of that Sholdt design.

Lady Hu, where do you live? I also wanted something very simple, but I wanted to dictate the proportions since nothing out there quite matched what I wanted...I''ve looked at so many settings, I finally decided I wanted to have one designed, so I could dictate the proportions to exactly what appeals to me...after talking with a few different designers, I finally found one I want to work with (he was recommended to me by my fiancee''s friend). He should be getting started on my ring next week (I''m so excited!). But, he is in Fort Lauderdale...so I don''t know how you''d feel about working with someone long distance.

Hi Lady,
I can''t understand how those SA''s could be so intrusive!I''m sorry about your experience.
I second looking at Gelin & Abaci and also Sholdt design - sholdt are supposed to be lovely quality.

Here are some of my favorites by Mark Morrell that look sleek.

Hello Lady Hu,
35.gif

I am also a lurker that is coming out of lurkdom ( a little)
I just had to respond to your post, as that Robbins ring is ABSOLUTELY fantastic.

sorry for shouting.
But it is AWESOME.
I''ll be following this thread with interest, that design is wonderful.
I live a long long way from you though, so I doubt your solution will have any impact on my *wishful* upgrade.
all the best with it!
Lis
ps why was the sales man trying to talk your man into having you pay for the ring? So you''d spend more?

Wow! Thank you to everybody for all these wonderful responses! I had not seen the Gelin & Abaci or Steven Kretchmer until just now

I really like the Gelin & Abaci selection! That Sholdt design (r432-1P) is *gorgeous*!! But, it looks like the nearest retailers are in Oklahoma (i''m in Houston). I''ll need to do some research to see if I can see it in person. The Mark Morrell ones are also beautiful.

BlueJeans & Claudinam - We''re still considering going custom. I recently saw a post where someone was working with WhiteFlash. I looked them up and they''re right down the street from me

So we may go there if we can''t find something just right.

LauraOnline - My boyfriend just graduated and moved down so he doesn''t have a lot saved up yet and wasn''t intending to purchase a ring. My guess is the sales person really needed a sale.

I may need to start drawing in CAD and come up with the ''perfect'' design and look in to the Sholdt design. Thank you all for your help. As I get closer to finding (or designing) my special ring, I''ll keep you guys posted.

I'm in Canada, and we have a pretty popular Montreal designer, Claude Thibaudeau, who does some interesting work.

Good luck and keep us posted!

ETA: you really can't go wrong with custom WF espesh since they're in your own backyard!!!

Lady Hu, you're welcome! And that's so cool you have WF right down the street...as much as I think working long distance CAN work with the right designer, it's always nice to be able to sit down with them in person.

You are so lucky to live by whiteflash!!!!! Start some sketches and take a jaunt over there!

that Scholdt website is special, isn''t it
