Help needed!! Finally found my OMC should I go platinum or rose gold????

^ I think Niel is saying...In my opinion you’re NOT going to put it in any metal and make it look “white”.

Correct me if I'm wrong @Niel .

I too think you should embrace the color on that stone (or go with a whiter stone). As others have mentioned...yellow gold to play down
the color and white gold/unplated white gold or plat to embrace the color. No on the rose gold IMO.

I got my stone from Ilya. He is great at getting videos of the stone. Ask him to do a video comparing the two stones. Then you can see which you prefer color or size. I don't know if you've asked his opinion on his stones but I would tell him your priorities and see which stones out of his whole inventory he thinks might suit. It worked well when I did that. I've seen an AGS K at my local jeweler here that went full scale yellow in the sun and any sort of spotlighting. I would be skeptical that an O/P would not do that also.

Yes I’ve corrected thanks. Lol.

I have an AGS O and it’s very white facing for an O, probably what your jeweler meant, but it’s on O and it definitely shows tint!!! If the tint yours shows leans towards brown then rose gold is beautiful, but If it leans towards yellow which seems more common and which mine does, yellow gold is the way to go, or platinum. Mine is currently set in a platinum basket with a rose gold band, and it’s pretty...but she is set that way becuause I already owned the setting and I want to make sure I am madly in love with the stone before shelling out thousands on the yellow gold setting from CVB that I am madly in love with. Many O stones do not look good in rose gold. Platinum is always fine, I don’t think it clashes and it can be gorgeous with an O, but the color in an O is so stunning it just feels at home in yellow gold to me.

I'm late to the party, but here's my two cents:

#1, go with a white metal. Rose gold is beautiful, but trendy, and a few years from now will you still be in love with it? Platinum never goes out of style.

#2, a word of caution with such a delicate shank: those little diamonds can be a nightmare, and easily lost with a super delicate shank, no matter how well made. Putting the ring on and taking it off as well as wear (especially if you want to wear this on the daily) can cause in torsion of the ring if the shank is too delicate, which can result in loss of diamonds, and a misshapen shank. If you plan to love this ring on the daily, go with at least 1.8mm on the shank.

Rubyjim- I definitely prefer the O/P stone! And the reason I say yellow gold is because to me, I think yellow gold would compliment that particular stone.

That's another important consideration is the tone of the warmth of the stone, some might be more brown, others gold or champagne, hence some metal colours might suit better than others, just another thing to bear in mind.

PS - I love that we're now seeing so many warmer colours, years ago, it was just the colourless or near colourless that were the thing and few had the confidence to go with anything below J. It's fantastic to see so many warm diamonds!

OK I asked Ilya to send me the diamond!! I'm going to post pics when I get it in real life!
Thank you all sooooo much. You are all more helpful than you probably know.

I'm glad you're looking at the stone before you set it. With old cuts, you really really need to see it in person. I think only when your eyes have seen the stone can you decide how you want to set it. I have a K and I see white most of the time. I don't even consider it warmth. But maybe others see yellow. The only times that yellow is obvious to me is my work elevator where the walls are a gold metal. There are certain pics if it in my living room with yellow walls where it looks yellow. But I swear I see silver, blue and white reflections. Maybe my eyesight is really failing.

I can't wait to see what your thoughts are.

Hello!!!
I received the diamond and I am very torn!!
Sorry about my dry hands, oh my!!
I placed it next to a platinum band just to see the contrast. At first, I really was not in love with it, because it is so yellow, but the more I look at it, the more I am seeing it's beauty and charm.
What are your thoughts???
And I cannot seem to get clear shots?!
Thank you so much!!!

I think it’s a beautiful stone! The initial photos show obstruction but it’s due to the camera being too close. The last two photos you posted look great! Try taking it from 18” or further back and use your zoom.

That said, the stone has definite warmth which I think adds to the beauty of it. I would personally set it in yellow gold, but would love it in platinum too for added contrast.

I really like it and think it would be amazing in platinum or yellow gold with white gold prongs. The colour reminds me of beautiful buttery pale gold in some of the photos, in others it looks whiter but it's definitely a lovely and sizeable diamond.

Thank you Stonewell and Lorelei!!
What about the shape, does it look round? Do you see any cushion to it???
Stonewell, thanks for the tip!! I will do that.
In looking at the last picture, I see what looks like a big chip in it. Do you see it?? On the bottom left at around 7:00. That is not great. What do I do about that?

Lorelei,
why do you recommend white gold prongs??? What does that do as opposed to platinum?
You all are so helpful!!
Thank you so much!!!

Because a popular combination with a yellow gold band is to use white gold prongs to hold the stone. There are some schools of thought that believe WG prongs make the stone look whiter than YG, some who prefer YG prongs feel the contrast makes the stone look whiter but different strokes.

You go with what you feel is right.

The ' chip' might be a natural, take it to an appraiser to find out for sure, also check the grading report if the diamond has one. If you have a loupe, you should be able to see.

Ok that is neat. If I choose to do a platinum setting, would I still do white gold prongs? Or platinum prongs?

Thank you Stonewell and Lorelei!!

From the photos it looks rounded, but I also see the cushion shape too. I think how you choose to set it will enhance it one way or the other - using a four-prong style will definitely help it look more "cushiony". And if you go double prong, it'll accentuate the corners that much more.

As for metal preference, I would opt for platinum prongs, especially if you choose a four-prong style. Platinum is a softer metal, so it will bend rather than break like white gold may do. This can help lessen the risk of losing the stone.

Ah!!! Good!! I feel like it's cushiony but my mind is starting to play tricks! thank you!!!
You say 4 prongs, what do you think of 8?
Stonewell, I tried your trick holding the camera 18" away and it works!
I started a new thread with the 2 best pictures bc I cannot figure out how to delete all these bad pictures.
I hope that's not a faux pas.

hope I'm not derailing this (and I don't know what your budget is) but have you seen this one for sale on loupe troop? It's a 2.06 I VS1 OMC stone for around 10k. I think it looks amazing, I am tempted myself but of course have my own stone to keep me occupied. :D

Here's a video too: https://www.instagram.com/p/BipSnFqFhJi/

just went back a few threads and saw your budget. Did you ever end up calling Adam at OWD? he showed me a 2.03ct K I2 (that was gorgeous) that was much close to your budget. You should call him to see if he still has it. There might be pictures of it somewhere on here that my boyfriend posted when he was looking for stones.

No because I started working with Ilya and he is so kind and helpful. I feel bad going elsewhere.

totally understood! I inquired with Ivy and Rose too and found them to be so nice as well.

Oh good! Diamonds are tricky lil buggers to photograph. But practice makes perfect. lol

If you choose 8 prongs, spreading them evenly will make the stone look rounder, imo. However, if you group them so two are closer together, I think it’ll help enhance a cushion like appearance.

I’m running between meetings so I grabbed this quick pic off the net to illustrate. Others may have some additional suggestions to offer

It sounds like to me you are trying to love it, but you really don't quite love it.I'd be hesitant to buy a diamond with a chip, but I might if the cut otherwise was outstanding and I liked the color. The diamond is a pretty light yellow, but I wouldn't wear it for an engagement ring, personally, just because I like a whiter stone for an e-ring. But I think I told you earlier in the thread that I have an O color AVR (same as my avatar picture) that I am having set in a platinum antique style halo but the bezel around it will be yellow gold. So I am wanting the contrast between the color of the stone and the white halo.

My advice for you is to wait for a better stone. I think it won't be easy to sell if you buy it and later find a better one and want to sell. I missed it when you said you like my diamond, and thank you!, but there are OECs out there with flowery facet patterns, too. I've learned my lesson on settling for something that isn't exactly what I want, and I'd advise you to wait and get an outstanding stone that you really love. It can take time and patience, but it gives you time to save, too.

I don’t think there’s a chip based off those pictures - it’s only in the bottom two pictures that something looks odd with that dark spot - you can see a clear outline in the other pictures. But also @rubyjim, have a look at it close up yourself and you’ll be able to see if there’s a chip or not. They’re quite noticeable especially through a loupe.
In terms of colour, if you want a white looking diamond, this isn’t it. It’s light and looks quite bright but it really doesn’t look white. I think the faceting is really lovely though.
