BTW, the main concern I have on the GIA report is the Comment: Crown angles more than 35 degrees.

Is this a round brilliant?

On a fancy cut I wouldn''t worry - it may not have been such a great decision by GIA to include that comment with no explanation whether it is good bad or ugly. Besides, ''over; 35 is both 36 and 50 - what do I know?

The two things these angles can do is #1 make the stone bright or dull depending on how every detail of the cut tie together (on a brilliant style cut the match between the crown and pavilion angles is quite important, on other cuts... who knows - there are more than one angle to consider), and #2 if too steep or two flat the resulting sharp edges may be judged as exposed to chips. But I wonder how well this can be predicted - there are lots of old cut diamonds with very steep crowns that have survived without a blemish. Other have not... The setting (lower is safer), the size of the stone (the larger, the more exposed) and the way is worn should decide that.

This is about all that comes to mind about the respective detail. I am no expert though.

My 2c

What are your priorities?

If cut is in any way important, and supposing that we are talking about a round stone here, it is definitely not a good-looking stone. The stone will have a small diameter for the size, and only a good grade on polish and symmetry give it away as a stone that has not been taken care of.

With these measurements, one can readily assume that the stone has a combination of a very deep pavilion and a steep crown. Low light performance will be the result.

Live long,

Yes - a round brilliant

What are your priorities?

I would love to have a good cut.

On the other hand, I was making a comparison to another one, which....

0.40 ct
Depth : 62.5%
Table: 61%
Girdle: Medium to SLIGHTLY THICK
CULET: NONE
POLISH: V GOOD
FINISH: V GOOD
CLARITY GRADE: VS1, crystal and cloud.
COLOR: E, medium blue.

The second diamond might look better than the first but it is still a bit deep with a largish table and a thick girdle which too may cost you appearant weight. It isn't possible to really calculate cut quality without the crown and paviliion angles preferably or percents. Is it possible that the vendor can provide a Sarin report or Brilliancescope analysis? This would help. Also are you really set on having an E colour? In that size an SI1 clarity and even a G or H colour would look just as good as the E VS if the cut is great, you could then too go larger and get more bang for the buck. You will pay a premium for an E colour.

For example take a look at This diamond from Whiteflash purely as an example of what brilliant diamonds are out there. You don't say what your budget is, but I hope maybe this one will give you an idea of what to look for and what you can get for your money, I am far from an expert but hopefully a reasonably savvy and educated consumer. This diamond scored a 1.8 on the Holloway Cut Advisor, you might find better scoring diamonds, but this one would be far more beautiful than most diamonds you will see. Just do your research as you are doing before pulling the trigger.

Auch ...

Around half carat, you culd go allot lower in color without seeing any difference. This assuming a fine cut does not tally with the budget as yet.

F/G-Vs2/Si1 H&A would probably look better. ANyway, in the stats you cite there are no proportions given, so it is all a stab in the dark. The first happened to be far enough off the beaten track to guess something. For most table & depth leave far too much to guess.

How about this F-VS2 ? at least there is enough information to talk about.

Nice choice Ana!

Thank you very much! I think I will consider carefully before I commit.

That''s great! That is what we try to do is show what other options are out there so consumers can make an informed choice. Good luck and let us know how you get on !
