Hey guys,
I am an anxious LIW and I have read lots of posts about square vs. rectangle cushions, and old cut vs. brilliant, etc. So, the more I read the more I realize how complex a cushion diamond choice is! Well, my bf has already purchased my solitaire cushion ering, and I know only a few details that I have forced out of him. I want your help in decoding this diamond, and advice on whether my bf made a wise choice or not (he doesn''t know about PS!). Please let me know:

1. It is either a D or E color (he won''t tell me which of the two for the surprise factor)
2. It is approx. 7.00 mm X 7.00 X 4.00 mm. So, these numbers are not exactly what it will be, but he says it is square. I always wanted a square, but are rectangles better in some way because they seem more popular on PS?
3. It is set in a cathedral setting with double prongs. He came up with this all on his own and I love the sound of it! Any worries about the strength of the double prongs if the ring is white gold?
4. He says there are two inclusions (would not tell me more) but says it is "eye clean" and he also told me it is not SI2. Now, I know very little about the breakdown of these gradings so if anyone can educate me on VS2 vs. SI2, that would be great.

Any cushion experts out there, please help!

The only way to judge a cushion is to see it. So hopefully he bought from a jeweler with a good eye! Nothing is wrong with your setting. Plenty of people use white gold. Shape is personal prefererence. I think square cushions are lovely.

The next grade higher than SI2 would be SI1. SI1 can be a good value as long as it is eye clean.

Lamer, unfortunately, even if you had all the numbers and proportions, it wouldn't tell us much about your cushion. But I think you have to trust his judgement that he bought what he considered to be a beautiful diamond for you!!

As to your questions...

1) D or E colour should be gorgeous and icy white!

2) Shape is a matter of preference, a square is absolutely fine.

3) I have double prongs in WG, no problems at all with them or for durability.

4) Eyeclean is what really matters, with VS2 generally it should be difficult to see any inclusions at all with the naked eye in this size diamond. Many SI2 can be eyeclean also but it depends as not all SI2 are created equal, see this tutorial for more info on clarity.

This thread explains the concept of ' eyecleanliness.'

Thanks everyone! I agree, I need to see it (hopefully I will soon!). The good news is that he did hand pick it out in person and chose it for its "sparkle." I think the color may be a big part to play in that. I will check out all of the posts you provided too.
