Calling all diamond stud experts! My sister''s b-day is next Tuesday 3/18 (35) and my BIL is interested in getting her diamond studs (princess or rounds, whichever he can get in the largest size). Here''s the thing -- she wants a minimum carat weight of .75 or so total ctw, in a basic platinum setting (she''s has bad metal allergies and even has trouble with 14K sometimes) or 18K white gold. His budget . . .

1K.

Possible? Crazy? Anyone!?!?!?!?!?!

Unfortunately, he won't be able to get ONE .75ct for $1000, much less two. He could purchase from a store that has a trade-up policy so the earrings can be upgraded until she gets the size she wants.

eta: I see it's .75 TOTAL not each.

Oh no -- sorry, .75 TOTAL carat weight for both stones -- appx .37 each. I think I can get close with James Allen in WG -- any other thoughts?

Hey there -- I just ordered diamond studs this morning for my turning-13-on-Saturday daughter, Isabel...and I ordered from Blue Nile. They offer free 2 day delivery, I believe...but I paid $5.50 extra for overnight shipping to be safe. Since she''s so young, I went with the 1/2 carat total weight...

Anyway, Blue Nile offers preset ready-to-ship .75 total weight diamond earrings for these prices:

White Gold, 4 prong setting, H/I color, SI1-SI2 clarity, round diamond - $1100
Platinum, 4 prong setting, G/H color, VS1-VS2 clarity, round diamond - $1500

White gold, 4 prong setting, H/I color, SI1-SI2 clarity, princess diamond - $900
Platinum, 4 prong setting, G/H color, VS1-VS2 clarity, princess diamond - $1300

There should be no tax either -- as long as they aren''t being shipped to Washington state!

I am not familiar with the quality of Blue Nile studs -- or how good the cut is. In my case, I figured they should be fine for my daughter -- and hopefully better than fine. I know they have a good return policy (30 days) if they don''t meet expectations...

Good luck! Hope this helps....

Checking out most of the PS vendors it looks like it''s going to be difficult, if not impossible below about $1,500. Would he go down on size to 1/2 carat total and buy from a vendor who''d upgrade?

I designed my own diamond studs using Mondera about 18 months ago and paid $800 something for 0.72 ctw in yellow gold . . . but my earrings were K SI1-SI2 (they spread like much larger stones with diameters the same size as the stones I''m listing below; I picked stones with low depth percentages that still had good HCA scores). With platinum and today''s prices, $1000 is not feasible, especially on such short notice when you need to order preset earrings.

This is a set I''d consider but you''re at $1470 for the price: 0.78 H-I SI1-2

Definitely round. They work better on earlobes and they face up larger for the weight. But i agree that the budget is unrealistic to get good stones in a platinum setting. I think guys just don''t have a realistic view of how much good quality jewelry costs!

I would go with rounds but you won''t find that size in platinum with your budget. I agree get smaller ones from some place that will upgrade later. I love upgrades - it''s let getting a big discount when you buy something else.
