Recently hired a local artist to paint a mural on my front door. I love it, but am wondering if I should add a small butterfly or dragonfly in the general area of the yellow dot. What do you think would look best?

I thought of a hummingbird instead of a butterfly.

Very pretty BTW.

DK :))

Hummingbird! :) A dragonfly would be neat, too! I do agree, something in that area would provide the finishing touch and something to catch the eye, draw it in, and allow it to engage with the rest.

What an awesome idea, and beautiful work!

Beautiful door! I love dragonflies and think adding one to that area of the door would look really nice and more balanced :)

This is so beautiful and whimsical! The cute little rabbit reminds me of the Benjamin Bunny book =)2 A dragonfly in the top right would be a nice balance to fill out that empty area and catch your eye!

I love the dragonfly & hummingbird. Or maybe a sphinx moth?1597767705788.png

Beautiful door! Every day in the afternoon, my backyard is buzzing with a bunch of metallic blue dragonflies that come out and fly around and it’s just a beautiful sight! So I vote for dragonfly!

So pretty! I actually prefer the blank space there, since the other panels are more busy. I think it's a bit restful.

How lovely! The bunny is so cute. I think something in the top corner would balance it perfectly.

I say either.
But I’m inclined to go with what the artist felt it appropriate to leave it as finished.

It’s beautiful work, beautiful door!

I agree and often leave a lot up to the artist. In the original plan there was supposed to be another vine in the top panel that would include the house #s (our street has strange #s and I often get the wrong mail / packages). Once the artist got this far we both agreed adding the house #s would overwhelm the design and she finished here and said I should live with it for a week and then decide. I’m having trouble deciding and PSers have such good eye for design that I welcome your opinions.

Thank you for doing a mockup with a butterfly. It is a MUCH better visual than my yellow dot.

I think a lil something on the top right would make the door look more balanced.

But I'd only get it if the original artist added it. It might not look right if the addition doesn't go with the rest of it well enough.

The door looks uneven as it is, but I'm all about balance. A hummingbird or butterfly would be fabulous.

I vote to add something but maybe not as far up into the corner. I also like a little empty space.

that is the most beautuful front door i have ever seen and im not nornally into purple !
i want to paint a tiny tinker bell up there but then i think it might make the whole piece go from whimsical to corny so I'll go with the butterfly/ dragonfly/ hummingbird idea - maybe even a bumble bee

I don't mind it the way it is at all but if you decided to add something, my vote would be hummingbird!

Beautiful!

I love the idea of a little something in the corner. Hummingbird, dragonfly, bumble bee, or butterfly. Can't wait to see what you decide to do!

This is really pretty and special! Maybe fluffy clouds and or a sunshine or ray of light? I like the dragonfly too or hummingbird. Such a sweet home welcoming.

Negative space is important in composition.
I would leave it as the artist painted it.

Every corner does not need to be filled.

And 'Yay' for local artists!

Agree with leaving it as-is - the unnevenness is beautifully unexpected and just adds to the charm  It looks very deliberate!

What a gorgeous mural!!

Since you asked, while it's pretty it's not something I'd put on the outside of the front door of a house.

To me it kinda feels akin to putting pretty tattoos on one's face.
The problem isn't how nice or perfect the tattoos themselves are; it's how well they fit were they are put.

Inside the house, to me, would be preferred.

ive been looking longingly at every door in my house today
id love it on the inside of the laundry door or the inside of the linnen cupboard
im be really tempted to do the inside of my wardrobe doors but we have louvers
i just think it would be wonderful and cheerful to open the wardrobe to hang clothes and wow !!!

i also want to paint the inside of my kitchen cupboards bright 70s colours

Gorgeous door!!!!

Not a butterfly as you have one already!

If you want to add something I second the dragonfly or hummingbird however it is gorgeous as is.

Beautiful!!! I agree with @yssie
When my daughter took her college art classes (she’s an artist now) her professors always told her not to balance the subjects in the artwork. It took my DD some time to understand that as the perfectionist that she is.

Im usually a balance/symmetry person, but I love it as is. So beautiful. It's hard to see how it wouldn't make everyone who walks up to it feel happy and welcomed.

Reminds me a bit of de Gournay wallpaper
