DD will be 18 in December and a senior in high school and graduating in 2011. All I have been thinking about lately is redoing some of my rings and selling off some of my jewelry that I haven''t worn in a long time and DD definitely does not want. But one thing I do want to do is to get something very special for DD to commemorate her 18th birthday and also her high school graduation.

I asked for advice about a 5 stone ring that I have that has 2 outer bars with a total of 18 of either 1.2mm or 1.4mm diamonds. Someone suggested that I could make an eternity band with the 18 diamonds if I added some stones. Perhaps I could make an eternity band for DD with these diamonds and another gemstone?

I don''t necessarily have to use any of my current stones or jewelry for her present. I am just trying to get ideas of what to get her. She has a class ring that is in silver which she wears on her right middle finger. She does not like watches or bracelets, does not want any more earrings (she has diamond studs in her second holes and a matching bezeled pendant). What I want for her is to wear this piece of jewelry almost, if not, all the time.

Any suggestions and do you think I should get DD''s input as well since she will be the receiver of the gift? (don''t necessarily have to tell her it''s for her)

Definitely ask DD for her opinion. What I love doesn''t translate well to either of my daughters. One (pure heresy!) very seldom wears any jewellery at all.

She definitely wouldn''t wear any ring for very long. My other daughter is a jewelllery horse like me, but only prefers white metals and is allergic to nickel. She has mostly all silver rings, tons upon tons of earrings and necklaces. She chooses big statement pieces for rings though, whereas my other daughter, if she could be convinced to wear a ring at all, would choose small and delicate. YMMV, but it wouldn''t hurt to ask. She may surprise you.

Maybe you can have a fun mother/daughter day where you both try on different settings and styles and you can get a feel for what she likes?

I remember doing this with my mom years ago and she was shocked by the confession that I do not like gold and prefer white gold/platinum/silver for my jewelry. She also learned that I prefer unique styles to her preference of classic.

There have always been particular settings or styles that I drool over in photos but once I try them on I realize the setting style doesn''t work for me. In particular, I feel this way about full eternity bands - they bother me, I prefer half eternity. After many improptu shopping trips, my mom had learned my style - the result is that I am much more likely to wear the pieces she buys me with greater frequency than when she was buying me gold classic pieces she liked.

That sounds great, but I may come home with something for me. One thing I do know, DD does not like yellow gold. She tells me this all the time and that is why she doesn''t want any of my pieces.

I think on her next day off from school we''ll do lunch and browse some jewelry stores for ideas. I''m sure she''ll want to try on some pieces before she decides what she likes. I know she tried on almost every high school ring and kept coming back to the one she ended up with. She even counted down the days until she got her ring.

I like the idea of taking her shopping to see what she likes. If she has bezeled studs and a bezeled pendant that she wears often, maybe she would like a ring with bezeled diamonds (or alternating diamonds and colored gems), whether full eternity, half eternity or graduated 7-stone. I''m thinking of something similar to the Tiffany Jazz rings.
