Hey all. I''m picking out a rock and can''t decide between size and color. Here''s the ring

Rock 1:

Depth %: 62.0%
Table %: 58%
Symmetry: Very good
Polish: Excellent
Girdle: Medium to slightly thick
Culet: None
Fluorescence: None

and number #2:

Carat weight: 1.07
Cut: Ideal
Color: H
Clarity: VS2
Depth %: 60.1%
Table %: 59%
Symmetry: Excellent
Polish: Excellent
Girdle: Thin to slightly thick, faceted
Culet: None

Fluorescence: None

need more info, like at least give us the crown and pavilion angles to work with. Best if you can post IS/ASET pic of the stone in question.

agreed, you need the crown and pavilion angles for us to help you. Welcome to pricescope! Lovely setting!

Wow. glad I posted here. I can''t find this information. I have the dimensions which may help but I''ll keep looking:

Rock 1:
6.35 x 6.42 x 3.96 mm

Rock 2:
6.63 x 6.69 x 4.00 mm

Also note that the maximum rock that the setting holds is a 1.1 carat rock. I want it to look full but I''m more concerned about the proportions. I want it to look pretty not gaudy. I certainly don''t want it to look cheap though. Is there a big difference between a 1.0 ct and a 1.7?

Thanks for the help so far.

Sorry, 1.07.

the difference is pretty small - if you compared the 2 stones side by side you'd probably to be able to notice the small difference. A rule of thumb i've heard is that most people could see a difference of 0.1mm when compared side by side. But when considering the proportions of a ring, they'd basically give the same visual result if that makes sense. So I'd consider the sizes basically equal and would make my decision based on the other C's (including cost) at this point.

Can you give us the GIA report number? We can use that to look up the numbers we need. Agree with denverboy, you probably can't tell the difference with ideal cuts, but one of the stone might not be ideal cut, which is why we need to numbers to judge.

Got the info.
the .07
a 1.04 (a new one, G color)

The 1.0 carat one doesn''t have a report link yet and doesn''t arrive until the 28th which may be too late. Maybe I should keep looking. I''m kind of worried about the H color on the 1.07. Thanks for the input so far.

Both of the stones in the link look pretty good to me. The 1.07 scored a HCA 2.1 amd the 1.04 score a HCA 1.8, need IS or ASET for further comparison but BN does not supply those. H color is plenty white and nothing to worry about especially with the setting you have chosen. Take a look at the link I posted previously and see how white each of the stone in ideal cuts compares to an ideal cut color D. It is down to your personal preferences... :) Good luck.

Thank you for your post. This is an exciting and nerve racking process and I appreciate your input.

What kind of budget are you working with if I can ask?

$8000 including the ring which costs $1850. This leaves me a little over 6 Grand for the rock. I know that I want an ideal cut and vs2 clarity. I was also hoping to get at least G in color but maybe H is ok.

Just wondering if your girlfriend has seen the setting. If she has or if you are 100% sure this is her taste, great. But it is a very stylized setting with a lot of metal and has a contemporary look to it. You know your gal best but if you are picking your stone size based on this setting make sure she will be in love with the style.

Well, I wish I could ask her but I really want this to be a surprise. I am worried that she won''t like it but my gut says that she will and I think it''s beautiful. I know that the she wears thick silver rings now (that look similar by not as feminine) and that she once praised a a similarly styled ring. I also know that she would be uncomfortable with a showy ring and would be just as happy if I spent $5 at a pawn shop.

Still, I could be making a big mistake. I love to hear more thoughts on this.
