Help me pick out Stud Earrings

So my wife has hinted at wanting stud earrings this valentines day. I have $600-$650 to spend. Had so much help here when picking out an engagement ring that I figured I could get help getting studs.

So my questions are, what kind of specs are common for stud earrings? I don't want to go overboard on clarity and color. Her engagement Ring is G-SI1 and I was very happy with that for a ring.

Where would you recommend to shop for them? Don't need to be certified, and don't need a blue box. Just don't want to be scammed. I'm in NYC. My first thought was overstock.com - but what do I know....any help or even specific studs that you recommend is greatly appreciated.

many PSers have called ID Jewelry for studs. if you do a search for ID Jewelry you will find lots of reviews. If you call them, mention you are from PS!
 
Diamond prices and metal prices have increased substantially since you bought your engagement ring. You may be surprised, and not in a good way, at what you'll get for your money.

Looking quickly at ID jewellery it looks like 0.40 carat, which is about 3.8 mm per diamond: http://idjewelryonline.com/noncertdia.php

For studs, I would say you can go down and colour and clarity, and I would also go down in cut, but cut is still very important. I personally would consider going to K colour and SI2 in order to increase in size. I'd search at bluenile and ID jewellery.

Definitely get the smaller stud than the flower clusters. I think any size diamond studs are just so elegant! I don't feel the same about earrings when they have a bunch of diamonds in a cluster(or a flower), it's a personal choice but that's mine. It feels cheaper, like the person wants a bigger diamond but can't afford it. I know because I tried cluster types myself. The sparkle is also not the same. However, I've seen girls wear the tiniest studs and they always, always look perfect!

I also don't think I'd go as far as K. I/J would be as low as I'd recommend. You can definitely get si1/si2(if you get a look at them and there's no black carbon). Good luck, she's going to be so happy.

Truthfully, as others have said, with diamond and metals prices so high, I would honestly tell her you need to save longer for that. You can get the WF ready-set-go studs with .25 each, H-I SI for $921 and I just wouldn't bother with smaller or lower quality than that, personally.

To buy .30's that could be upgraded will cost even more. If these were for me, I'd just rather wait and get at least .30's later.

If she wants studs I'd definitely go that route. You aren't going to get large "statement" studs in your budget, but I personally think tiny superbly-made studs make *just* as much of a statement ::)

I have three pairs of studs of various sizes and the 0.1ctw baby bezels get by far the most use. They're adorable, and they're the first earrings I reach for - they're perfect for dressing down and getting dirty with as the bezels are completely hassle-free, they're perfect for work, and they're great for dressing up with too because the size choice looks deliberate.

So through a trusted vendor I am found a pair of stud earrings, 3 prong martini white gold, .63 ct G/H VS2 for $650. Good buy?
 
As long as the cut is great that seems like an excellent price! I bought my bezel set studs at the end of 2010 from BGD, .7ctw g/h si1/2 for $700 and prices have skyrocketed since then so this seems pretty good if the cut is good!
 
yes sounds good if the cut is good! I assume these do not have GIA reports? I think that is fine for studs from a trusted vendor.
 
No GIA report. Should I ask for an appraisal or some sort of documents from the vendor?

Also, do you recommend 3, 4 martini or bezel?
 
The setting is personal taste, I love bezels because they are smooth and add some visual size, many others prefer the prong settings esp. martinis as they seem to "sit" nicely in the ear and not stick out. What does your wife usually wear?
