Hi all,

I recently discovered this forum and have found it to be immensely helpful in my search so far. I'm only disappointed I didn't find this months ago! My boyfriend and I are planning on making a custom setting for e-ring. He wants to keep the actual diamond a surprise, but I think it will be somewhere in the range of 1.7-1.8c, round brilliant, but unfortunately I don't have any specs to share yet. I would love your help picking between between these two settings (that I found thankfully to PS)!

Here's what I'm thinking so far (forgive my terminology errors, I'm a newbie!): I have very small hands (not very thin, just short and small, haha) and am about a 6 - 6 1/4 ring size. I'd like a thin shank (1.8-2mm) with cut down pave from 7 to 5'oclock with ~2pointers (I'm going for the 'diamonds floating on the band' look). This is what I'm debating between for the head -- basket or prong:

1. Prong style similar to the Tiffany Novo head but with less metal (thanks, firemouse)-- examples seen here: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/newbie-receives-ring-has-picts.158856/?uid=56974 and http://vimeo.com/17906061.. And also a very similar looking one from SK http://www.stevenkirsch.com/showroom/engagement-wedding-bands/solitaire/ref-0208.html..

or 2. More of an open basket (is that the right word?) style as seen here (again, thanks diamondnut!-- great pictures on all 5 pages): https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/my-2-51-e-vs1-upgrade-in-a-leon-setting-is-here.81001/page-3

With the second option, I also played with the idea of having melee on the struts of the basket (similar to https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/my-leon-mege-ring-experience.156266/) but I'm pretty sure I want to keep things simple versus rink overwhelming the stone. For my wedding band, I'm envisioning a thin matching pave setting, close to the width of the e-ring. I'd like them to sit close together, but not necessarily flush -- am also open to suggestions on this. How would the settings/head need to change in order to have the ring sit flush?

Would love any thoughts or opinions! Thanks in advance!

I'm thinking 1 pointers are going to work better with a 1.8 shank.

I would call Steven Kirsch and see what he proposes for you-- after you talk to him you can just tell you BF to work with him for your setting . My own halo is by him and I've seen other examples of his work that are just beautiful, delicate but still strong. He's very professional and has a great eye for proportion and design.

Thanks for the input, Gypsy. I'm not sure if the BF has the budget for SK (unless I am overestimating his cost?) but I will definitely suggest that. If we end up going with another jeweler I just wanted to have specs in mind so he/she could create the look I'm going for. I'll definitely take note of the size of the diamonds in the pave. Did you have a visual preference between the two settings themselves?

I love the first one!

I love the first one too! I think if you do the second it would be hard to remake unless you went with Leon for it.

Totally prefer the first. BGD and GOG both have really lovely Novo inspired settings.

:wavey:

I wouldn't even consider going custom unless you go with someone like SK. I would much rather go with something known like the GOG Novo that is very nice quality.

I really appreciate all the replies. I spoke to the BF about what his plan was for the setting-- he is purchasing the stone from a trusted family jeweler and she had told him she would give all our specifications to someone "she trusts" to make the custom setting (this is all second hand info, so I don't have the specifics). I agree my hesitation is that it may not come out to my specifications (or as nice as an SK or Leon) and thus may be safer to go with something I know like GOG. Do you think there is any use in trying to contact the jeweler directly to discuss ideas or get samples of his work (or maybe someone would recognize him/her on here--- we are in the NYC area)? Or does that all sound too risky?

Just a word of caution--these situations usually don't end up working out, and both parties end up resentful or upset. I would probably use a trusted Pricescope vendor for the setting.

Welcome to PS by the way!!
