Hi everyone, I''m new to the forum but have been a long time reader. So it''s my turn to get an engagement ring for my girlfriend of over 6 years. I have talked to one of her best friends and will talk to her mom tomorrow about rings. I''m leaning toward this one:

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/engagement-solitaire-ring.html

I feel like it''s simple but still elegant. My budget is about 4000 and looking at these diamonds:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/E-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1234585.asp

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/F-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1240592.asp

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1185407.asp (I like this one)

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/F-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1188223.asp

So I was hoping I could get a trained eye to suggest which one was best or any other suggestions would be great. I could go maybe a little bigger and still be eye clean, but I''ll see. Thanks in advance for the help.

So far I like the #3 the best, #4 might be good but the angles are such that an Idealscope image will be needed to verify. I would request Idealscope image for #3 and #4 then.

#3 is a good diamond but a bit deep, good angle combo. #4 an Idealscope image is definitely needed.

If you are unfamiliar with Idealscope, this page explains

Thanks for the suggestions Stone cold and Lorelei. I talked to the JamesAllen customer service to have an idealscope sent on the two you both suggested #3 and 4. I''ll post them as soon as I get them. I''m also going to talk to the gemologist on the phone who will have looked at the diamonds. That person who they say is a certified gemologist also provides an appraisal. So I was wondering what kind of questions specifically about those two should I ask the gemologist and should I send for an independent appraisal?

The main concern is with the angle combo on #4 being 35/ 41, this is entering the steep deep zone where leakage can result, so check with the gemologist if the diamond is showing signs of leakage and request an IS image.

An independant appraisal is often prudent I think, the seller will provide an appraisal you can use for insurance purposes probably but a third party expert opinion can be valuable.

I'd say you're leaning the right way. The IS for the first diamond is excellent!

ditto.

Ditto Jet, but they are both excellent images.

Thanks for all your help. I went ahead and bought the ring with the first diamond and I''ll post pictures as soon as I get the ring.
