If you are the type of guy that shops around for the best quality for your money, then you wouldn't be in this situation. It sounds to me that you decided to start doing research AFTER you purchased the diamond.

Very true, however I *thought* I had been educated enough to make the purchase, that is until I found this website. I was very leary of purchasing a diamond off the internet but I not found any of the websites like whiteflash.com or jamesallen.com. Jeez, I really wish I would have found this website a few weeks ago.

Well, I hope it works out for you. Just be very firm. There was a similar story around here some time back (I'll see if I can find it for you) and I believe Robbins Brothers did come through in the end, but they had to be nudged. Which RB did you buy from?

ETA, Seems like the thread is gone. I remember the poster was ZhuZhu, and she doesn mention her experience on this thread. But she didn't get the money back...only upgraded the metal on her ring.
 
Well, I went to a local Jared store (luckily there was one only 10 mins away) and looked at an AGS 0 cut diamond, which Jared's calls the "Peerless". All their other diamonds are IGI certified which they told me was a *very good certification*.

They showed me the AGS 0 (Peerless) .53 ct. next to one that was almost exactly the same in specs as my fiance's current diamond which was IGI cert'd .63 H color SI2 except the polish rated "excellent". Now from my first reaction and though I did not have my fiance's diamond to compare side by side, the IGI cert'd stone they showed me looked to have more sparkle than my fiance's current diamond and I really think it looked nicer. But I could be wrong as I did not have her diamond to compare. Would a higher rating in polish alone give that much more sparkle or could it just be inconsistencies in IGI certs?? When I compared it next to the AGS 0 there was definitely a big difference in sparkle. So I think that is the route I am going to go through whiteflash.com.
 
Also, I spoke to a guy at James Allen on the phone and he was familiar with the AGS 0 princess diamond. He said though they sell very few of them on their website, their GIA Ideal cut princess diamonds are just as good a cut as the AGS 0. Any comments on that?
 
The difference is the sparkle department is due to the cut (not polish - the cut is affected by the total combination of depth%, table%, crown%, pavilion% and more), hence the AGS0 rating. Your stone has a very low crown height, which means low sparkle factor. As long as you stick to a stone with AGS0, you are pretty much guaranteed to have a fantastic diamond.
 
Unfortunately as I mentioned before IGI is NOT known for consistent grading, so yes there could be a difference between the one your FI has and another seemingly similar one from IGI. AGS is not the same though, they are very consistent with their grading, so any AGS0 stone will have great performance and will be very very similar.

No, this isn''t true. Best to stick with an AGS0. While SOME GIA excellent stones will be the same, they all won''t. Again, unless you''d like to spend a lot of time researching it, AGS0 is a very easy safe way to go. And you wouldn''t really save anything by buying a GIA stone over an AGS stone as they generally carry similar premiums.

I think I have it narrowed down to 2 diamonds and am wondering if someone who is good at the "math" of the cut could tell me if there is a huge price to quality difference in the two below.

.603 ct H VVS1 A Cut Above Princess

.61 Carat D-SI1 Ideal- Cut Princess

I know it was already said the typically AGS0 stones are a better cut than James Allen GIA Ideal cut, but between the two above specifically is there a huge difference based on depth, table, crown, etc?

casey, i can't help with princess stones but i'd go with the AGS0 if it were me just b/c that rating by AGS means a ton and they are such a well respected lab, the cream of the crop stones usually get sent to AGS over GIA. But, you might start a new thread saying something about *need help with 2 princess stones* so the princess folks will see it. they might night check back into this thread.
