Help me find YG, 4 prong- north-south orientation setting?

I have fallen madly in love with another PS member's solitaire.. Msee. I hope she doesn't mind that I am desperately trying to replicate her ring!

The petite tapered band, the four yellow gold prongs in that orientation.. I just can't get over it! But I cannot for the life of me find a ring setting that quite fits that's specifications! I know platinum and white gold are stronger, and I am putting into consideration that I may ::gasp:: lose my diamond if I choose to mount it in yellow gold... but that contrast in colors is so delicious to me!

Can anyone help? Any input would be appreciated as well! After finding the setting I still need to find the rock! :) Thanks PS community

Who told you that white gold is stronger than yellow gold?

Re: Help me find YG, 4 prong- north-south orientation settin

I just spoke to Union Diamond in Atlanta, GA, hoping to be able to find someone locally so we can buy in person- they priced the "custom" setting at around $1000! Seems too simple to be that expensive, to be honest! :/ I'm hesitant to visit local jewelers w/o a recommendation or good review. I've searched a lot of websites I've seen here on PS for this setting, and I can't quite find it. I was hoping you veterans can point me in the right direction :halo:

A former jewelry salesman told me that white gold would be stronger than yellow gold. May be why he doesn't sell jewelry anymore?

I've read that various places, for years. Jewelers have said that. Platinum, WG, YG is strongest to softest. That info has been floating around for a long time.

A peg 4-prong head, rotated, will put the prongs in that orientation. So would a 4-prong that solders directly to the shank on each side. So, you need to pick a shank and an appropriate head. Stuller Solstice 4-prong would look good like that. Her shank might be a cathedral (can't tell from photos). Roseco makes some elegant cathedrals, but consult a jeweler to see what will mate up with what to give the look you want. "Findings", "shanks," heads," are what to look at to assemble a solitaire similar to that.

If you are comparing the same karat gold, there should be no strength difference between WG and YG. If you are comparing a 24k yg band to a 14k wg, then the yg will definitely be less strong, because pure gold will always be softer than one with an alloy. 14k yg and a 14k wg should have the same strength.

But, what do I know. I haven't been around these parts too long.

Re: Help me find YG, 4 prong- north-south orientation settin

Terminology being used here is the problem.

Strongest and softest are misleading as they are being used above. They are not opposites. The opposite of strong is not soft. It's weak. The opposite of soft is not strong it is hard. And harder does NOT mean stronger with metal. Hard can mean brittle, which is not strong. And soft doesn't mean weak.

Platinum is SOFTER than 18k and 14k gold. But it is the more durable. Gold, in higher carats is softer, but it is better for some applications and it's more durable than other metals that are harder than it.

Also it's not just the alloy or metal that determines strength. A diestruck piece will be more durable than a cast one, so method of fabrication has an impact on how durable the metal may be.

14k wg alloyed w/ Ni will be significantly more brittle

So, does roughly $1000 for this setting sound reasonable?

Re: Help me find YG, 4 prong- north-south orientation settin

What are they actually doing for you? Are they basically reorienting the head on a stock setting? If so, that sounds really expensive to me.

Depends on what you are getting for that price. If they are designing a ring for you with the prong orientation you want and an integrated head, it's an fine price. BGD's Grace and Elegance settings retail for 1100 ish, so that's about right.

If they are just switching out a peg head in a stuller/etc. shank, then it's too high.

Re: Help me find YG, 4 prong- north-south orientation settin

$1000 sounds high to me. Shop around. Did you check with Brian Gavin to see about having something like that made? My shank is in 18 kt. yellow gold but my prongs are all done in platinum. Might be an option for you too if you are concerned about the prongs.

Ditto Gypsy on the metal explanation. Her terms are spot on!

Re: Help me find YG, 4 prong- north-south orientation settin

Thanks all! Union Diamond is looking for the setting right now, already made, in that case they wouldn't have to custom make it for me. I'm crossing my fingers that'll save me a few bucks for the diamond! I also showed the picture and requested a price from Whiteflash and James Allen. After that'll I'll start narrowing down my rock options! With a price point of about $5000 including the setting... would you all say I can find a quality round at right under a carat? Union was telling me that they would be looking at EGL rather than GIA diamonds at that price... any opinions on this and how do you all feel about purchasing online via Whiteflash/James Allen/Blue Nile vs. buying in store? Ordering custom from Whiteflash/James Allen will make any chance of a warranty or refund out of the question so that's a little scary for me!

Re: Help me find YG, 4 prong- north-south orientation settin

EGL graded diamonds are usually cheaper because they are not comparable to AGS/GIA in terms of color and clarity. No deals to be had with EGL stones - do a search on this topic. Plenty of info on this forum regarding topic. Stick with GIA/AGS graded stones.

Could be a nice stone and I would definitely recommend calling ID Jewelry. Tell them you are a PS member and what you are looking for in terms of stone and setting. They have pulled some nice rabbits out of the hat for folks!

Re: Help me find YG, 4 prong- north-south orientation settin

Thank you all again, I am learning a lot from PS. Yekutiel w/ ID is working with me to find a setting and diamond, and I will visit stores this weekend to determine what my tolerances for cut/color/clarity are, and how I feel about carats.

Does anyone want to look at this diamond for me from Bluenile, and give me any opinions? It scored well on the HCA tool...

And how do you feel about Bluenile overall?

I would just contact them and ask them to set the head at a NSEW ( and in yellow gold if you like)
I cant imagine thats too dificult, and I know a lot of vendors mange prong stuff like that without a charge
