NOTE: If you read this post earlier, please re-read. My sister has decided to go with an Old European Cut instead (I showed her one, and she was instantly in love). This changes the stat requirements as well, as most OEC's have lower color, etc.

Hey, everyone! I desperately need your help! My sister is getting engaged and needs to find a diamond ASAP. They actually want to order it today so they can have it by the time her boyfriend flies to Tucson to see her later this week. So exciting!

They are trusting ME to find the perfect 3/4 ct OLD EUROPEAN CUT (since I know much more about diamonds than they do). They are going to order it from one of the PS vendors online, so please, help me find the perfect diamond for my little sis!

DIAMOND REQUIREMENTS:

At least .60 CTS
$2000 budget (give or take a few hundred dollars)
J or better color
SI2 or higher clarity
GIA certified

Ideally, we need to find her "perfect diamond" by the end of the day. Thanks so much for you help!!! :appl: :appl: :appl:

Setting included?

I will say people have been telling me at that size you won't be able to see the difference in facetting pattern, just the difference in light performance

Shoot! Really? Well, I think she's stuck on OEC's now. She's so excited. I think we're going to go with an OEC anyway, but thanks for the advice. :-)

To answer your question about the setting, the budget does NOT include the setting. She found an Amavida setting (by Gabriel and Co.) she loves. It has an octagon shaped halo. Their website isn't working right now though, so I can't pull it up! :knockout:

What do you all think about this one?

I was just looking at that one and wondering if I should suggest it! I like it - the cut's amazing, they have a great trade up policy for the future "just in case," and it's UNDER budget. What's not to like? You might also contact them and ask if there's anything they haven't posted yet: once in a while, they surprise you.

Okay, forgot about that fact that many OEC's are not certified, so it does not have to be GIA certified. I am loving the .62ct GOG OEC. In fact, it is even spreadier than the JBEG .70ct OEC!

You should reserve it I really like that one too. I'd buy it myself. Would she get the setting from there too?

I'm not sure if the "limited policy" includes a trade in option but couldn't tell one way or the other on the website. But it is very pretty!

On the other hand, there's the 6mm one on DB from Fortekitty:

I also still run the disagreement that you can't see a difference in faceting in a 6mm stone. I know I can't in a 4.5mm, just that it's different, but I can very clearly see the difference in facetting in my 6.75mm OEC versus the 6.3mm modern stone. Here's a pic. I purposefully made it small so you can see there is a difference, even without a loupe. SOrry for the crummy pics though, I'm wearing black and the light has a soft brown lampshade in a brown room....

ETA- sorry I didn't see the J or better qualification...Perhaps Nielseel might find FK's stone interesting. :) I know I do!

Oh boy, I just found an AVR that I love! http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/9320/
I called GOG and spoke with someone about it. They said it would completely "outshine" the .62ct OEC. Plus, the AVR would have a lifetime trade-up policy with it, whereas the OEC would not. Hmmmmm.....Thoughts?

Bastetcat~ Thanks for the diamondbistro link. Unfortunately, my sister is very color-sensitive, and even though she loves the antique cuts, she doesn't want a warm diamond. I would take it in a heartbeat though!

Sorry for the mini thread jack.
That is lovely b-cat, but I'm too scattered to seaside right now. I've been looking at old cuts, emerald cut..... now I'm looking at maybe just resetting it in a two town rose gold/WG split plain shank halo. I'm scatterbrained right now

No problem guys- I didn't see that about color until after I posted. But the AVR might be a good idea. They probably have one of the best upgrade policies around! And that would definitely be included. The only thing I'd say with starting small is make sure the ring can take a larger stone, or there's a lot more saving involved in upgrading and finding a new setting and it's a real hassle.

Nielseel- I think you'll eventually find what you want and like but a step back to clear your mind might in deed be a good idea! I wouldn't rule out old cuts for yourself. They might truly surprise you, but I think you should see them in person because seeing them on here can give a really skewed idea of things sometimes. Go visit an antique show if you can! :wavey:

Yeah I think I just need to stop looking at other peoples and realize why I loved my pesr in the first place, that and I'm probably going to get it out of that bezel, it did perform better when it was in prongs.

Woohoo! My future BIL just bought this AVR! http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/9320/
So excited for them! Thanks for your help, everyone! (Even though I'm the one who found it. Haha!! :cheeky: ) I'll be sure to post pics once she gets the ring (2-3 weeks). :appl:

YAY!

I can see a big difference in facet patterns from 4.5mm+. But that's just me, and I have 20/20 vision.

I love OECs too!
It's a beautiful stone and I'm sure it will be a gorgeous ring. Please post hand pics ! :)

Hooray! 5.3mm is nothing to sneeze at. It'll look fantastic!!! Hits pretty much all your specs, and of course it'll look great.

Great choice! Gosh it makes me want one to.

great choice! i recently had the opportunity to see some AVR's in person and they did not disappoint

Here is the link to the engagement ring and wedding band (wedding band will be purchased in the near future) my sister is getting her diamond set in. Her fiance ordered both the diamond AND the setting from Good Old Gold. The setting in platinum will be $2450, which is cheaper than the price quoted on the Gabriel NY website. I will post pics as soon as she receives it! So exciting!!!! :appl:

Oh wow that is the perfect setting for an AVR! ::)

Beautiful choices! I hope you can post a photo of the finished ring once they get it.
