Hello All!

my 3 year anniversary is coming up and we are upgrading my stone!!! I currently have a .76 round and we are upgrading to something over 1.5ct. We were in college when we got married so now that we are both working I want to have something a little nicer. We have just started our diamond search so I apologize in advanced that this will probably be the first of many posts asking for assistance on diamonds.

Right now our jeweler found 2 in stock that covers all my requirements. Hopefully he will find some more in the next two months so I will have a larger selection to choose from.

Stats:
Round 1.51 F SI2 Ideal cut
Cushion 1.70 F SI2 1:1.2 length to width (what does this mean)

I really like the idea of having a larger stone but I dont'' want the quality to be horrible. For right now which stone would you choose?

First, which lab is grading the stone. At SI2, check to ensure that it is eye-clean to your standard.

For the round, we can do some elimination if we have the table, depth, crown and pavilion angles. Nothing similar for cushion, for that and other fancy shapes we will need to see images, preferably ASET image.

awsome! I will email the jeweler and see what info i can find and post back!

Thank you.

Hi Sarah,

What I would suggest you do if you prefer to buy from a jewellery store, is to buy an ASET scope to help you, this can be used on both rounds and fancy shapes.

It is also straightforward to use, click here to learn how to interpret the images.

Length to width just refers to how long and wide the diamond is. If you are looking at SI clarities them make sure to check carefully the diamonds are eyeclean. Beware of SI clarities which have clouds as the grade setters ( marked on the clarity plot) as sometimes these can impact brilliance and fire. If however it says " clouds not shown" in the comments section then this is not an issue - if it mentions " clarity grade is based on clouds which are not shown" then this could be.

If you find a round diamond you like then report back here with the following info -

Name of grading lab and cut grade if applicable
depth%
table%
crown and pavilion angles
girdle thickness
polish and symmetry grades
diameter in MM
star and lower girdle facet percentages

With a cushion look at as many different types as you can so you know which type appeals to you, use the ASET and your eyes. Ask with any diamond if you can view it away from any store lights or alternatively under a table where the light is dim, see if the diamond " dies" or shrinks visibly once strong lighting is removed. Also with a cushion, see if the seller can run a Sarin scan on the stone to get detailed measurements, you can then post the report here plus any images you might have.

As for the 2 contenders above, no way to know which is best without more info such as the above.
