So, my mom and step-dad''s 25th anniversary is next year, and she thinks she wants a new wedding set. Her original had to be cut off after it went flat in the back, and she had lost the original stone years before that. About 5 yeasr ago my mom''s cousin happened to have a 1/4ct diamond in her purse (I wish I just had diamonds floating around!) and had that mounted for my mom to wear. I think it''s time she got an upgrade. She doesn''t want anything over about a 1/2ct, and either a heart or round stone. Finding a diamond is the easy part, it''s finding a mounting I need help with. She only wears yellow gold, and likes the 80''s type styles, and likes the rings to fit together. She also mgiht be interested in antique styles. Everything I''m finding online is platinum or white metals. So, pricescope community, do you know where I could find some 80''s flashbacks to show her?

Thanks!

Mustaggal,

you should check out Pearlmans Closeout and Previously owned sections. tons of yellow gold at great prices. if she''d go a little bit bigger for a stone, i think this is a beautiful YG setting and he''s got the matching wedding band too..

MG,
you might also check with a vendor who has something pictured in WG or Plat and ask if they can get it in yellow gold. White metal is a lot more popular now so that''s what they show, but a lot of the settings would come in YG i''d think...

Thanks for the help, anyone find any mounting for heart shaped stones? I like the Pearlmans one, but I''m not sure if she would. I''m going to take her out to some local stores over labor day and see if I can narrow down what she wants.

Well, after years of the reign of white metal, the fashion pundints on the today''s show said that gold is starting to make a come back in a big way. So, maybe the stores are starting to carry some.

For '80s like channel set, baguettes, etc. look at ebay stores Oxford Diamond and Outrageous Auctions. Most of the non-antique mounts there will have a head for a .5ct (5mm) round. You can have any peg type head changed to a heart or other shape for about $80 to $100 by a jeweler. Outrageous may make you one with just the head you want at no additional charge.

Hearts are generally sold to very young girls. Round brilliant will retain value and always be easiest to trade or resell. A 5mm RB if very well cut can be quite showy. I recommend economizing on the setting and going up to .6ct to .7ct RB, though. It's enough to be a headlight without being too bulky.

Sometime this weekend I'll post a pic of my .58ct 5.1 x 5.2 mm RB in one of Oxford's .40-.45ct diamond WG settings. It is a deeper older diamond that faces up smaller than it's weight but it is drop dead gorgeous. So are the diamonds in the Oxford semi-mount.

Picture. They also sell this in yellow gold. Makes a nice 3-stone for anniversary.
