Hi everyone, I have been searching and doing my research for about 2 months now. We have been going to jewlers to look at stones, and visited some nice ones, and some not so nice ones, and I have been doing a lot of my research on line.
The time is closing in on when I want to propose to my girl, and I am looking at a few stones, and working with one jewler on 47th street, in NYC. I found the exact same stone on BN(BlueNile) for a lot less, thats fine, I am sure I am going to negotiate the final price, but I wanted to know if somebody can say weather or not this is a nice stone, and perhaps give me a rough estimate at what it should cost.

Report Type: GIA Diamond Grading Report
Date of Issue: September 23, 2008
Round Brilliant
Measurements: 6.56 - 6.59 x 4.10 mm
Carat Weight: 1.09 carat
Color Grade: E
Clarity Grade: VS1
Cut Grade: Excellent
Proportions:
Depth: 62.4%
Table: 56%
Crown Angle: 35.0°
Crown Height: 15.0%
Pavilion Angle: 41.0°
Pavilion Depth: 43.5%
Star length: 50%
Lower Half: 80%
Girdle: Medium to Slightly Thick, Faceted
Culet: None
Finish:
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Fluorescence: None
It is also listed as Hearts & Arrows stone.

I have looked at it, and its a very nice stone, and its within the price limit of what I am looking to spend, but I am looking to see if somebody on this forum can give me more feedback.

Thank you.

You can do better on the cut.

Ditto NF.

And why would you purchase the stone at a higher price anyway? Why not order it through BN and be done with it?

both of you guys make perfect sense... there is no reason to spend 500 to 700 dollars more on it.
Can you also give me some advice on what I should be looking at ? You mention that I can get a better cut stone, are you looking at the Measurements: 6.56 - 6.59 x 4.10 mm and going based on that? If so, what should be a better cut ? I appericate the help, and sorry if I am asking newbie questions.

Here are some suggested numbers for a very tightly cut round diamond that you can use. Bear in mind, the combos for crown and pavillion angles at the steeper and shallower ranges may need further examination.

depth - 60 - 62 ( although you can go deeper if all else is right, suggest a max of 62.6%)

table - 54 - 57%

crown angle -shallower 34 - 35% getting a bit steeper = further eval

pavillion angle - shallower 40.5 - 40.9 or 41 getting a bit steeper= further eval

girdle thin to slightly thick, medium, slightly thin are all fine, avoid extremes such as thin to ex thick.

Then plug the numbers into the HCA tool (under TOOLS above). You want your diamond to score 2 or under. And lower isn''t better, just anything 2 or under should be considered.

I would just change the pavilion angle to 40.6 and you should be good to go!

As the above implies, configurations depend on each other. A little give here can still work with a little take there.

With that said, here''s a "Cliff''s Notes" for staying near Tolkowsky/ideal angles with GIA reports (their numbers are rounded): A crown angle of 34.0, 34.5 or 35.0 is usually safe with a 40.8 pavilion angle. If pavilion angle = 40.6 lean toward a 34.5-35.0 crown. If pavilion angle = 41 lean toward a 34.0-34.5 crown.

GIA "EX" in cut is great at its heart, but it ranges a bit wider than some people prefer, particularly in deep combinations (pavilion > 41 with crown > 35).
