In my ongoing quest to find the right stone for my upcoming engagement....i'm trying to decide what stone to get for her ring.

My girlfriend has a ring size of 3.5 (tiny) so that why i've been looking in the .75 ct range. I'm going with a channel setting in platinum.

I've be dealing with a local diamond broker and these are 3 stones he currently has in possession.

All stones are GIA cert & IDEAL cut. All are round brilliant cut.

ROCK - 1 (the only one i have the full specs on)
Ct Weight: 0.78
Colour: E
Clarity: VS2
Total Depth: 62.5%
Table: 54%
Crown Angle: 35.5
Crown Height: 16
Pavillion Angle: 40.8
Pavillion Depth: 43
Cutlet: none
Symmetry: VG
Polish: VG
Flouresence: STRONG BLUE
Measurements: 5.92x5.85x3.67

I had originally posted this stone a while back with NO flouresence but came to find out it's STONG BLUE. I'm a bit weary of the STRONG BLUE floro on this stone. From what i've read on the forums here, the answers are all over the charts as well.

ROCK - 2
.78 SI1 G colour
Symmetry & Polish - EX
Eye clean (verified in person).

I like the fact of the EX polish and symmetry.
I'm a bit weary of the G colour as i've always looked at buying a F colour or higher.

ROCK - 3
.82 SI1 G colour
Symmetry & Polish - VG
Eye clean (verified)

Again i'm a bit weary on the G colour thing again.

All opinions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

It would be helpful to have depth/table % and crown/pavillion angles on stones 2/3. It''s hard to evaluate these without that info.

Stone one is just ok; I think you can do much better. It is a bit deeper than I prefer and thus will appear smaller than it''s carat weight and you could do better with light performance.

The strong flr. bothers me less because this is rarely a problem unless it makes the stone appear milky cloudy, which is usually not the case... or if you don''t like the look of flor.

The G color will be WHITE!!! Please do not worry about G color. Many here have I/J stones that face up very white, and only have a small tint of color from the side view. You won''t be able to see any color in a G.

Ditto Koursie, the first is a bit on the deep side, and I am not keen on that steep crown angle. The flourescence is rarely a problem even with stong blue. To put this in perspective, one of our very respected experts has been in the diamond business for many years and only occasionally has seen strong blue give a negative effect on a diamond - a handful of stones maybe in all that time.

Post the crown and pav angles and any other info on the others and we can go from there.

Also no worries on the G, it will look very white.

There seems to be a range (E/VS2 vs G/SI1) with these stones. It may also help to post the costs. It will allow for a better analysis of value.

You would also want to be sure stone 2 and 3 have certificates if you want ideal stones.

fluorescence is a personal preference. since your broker has this stone for you to look at, you are the best one to determine wheter or not it is right for you. as long as the stone doen''t look hazy in direct sunlight, the fluoro. is fine. it will defitinetly glow in blacklight conditions but whether or not you are able to notice any effects in normal lighting conditions, only you can tell.

the other two diamonds, as mentioned, don''t have *near* enough information to make a judgement on.

if you can get more info on the second two, we could make guesses on what might be better by the numbers but since you have the opportunity to see these in person, buy what looks best to you.

Mini update:

I went back to look at the .78 SI1 G Ideal stone.

My broker just got this stone in late last week do he only has a Canadian GemScan cert. He can get GIA done, but then i''ll be waiting quite a while to get that back.

The GemScan cert only list the following info:

Size: 5.99mm x 5.92mm x 3.61mm
.78 ct
G colour
SI 1 clarity
Ideal cut
EX symmetry & Polish.

I spent a good half hour looking at this stone today...as far as i can see its definitly eye clean and no inclusions in the table when looked at with a 10x loupe.

I know this isn''t enough info to fully grade the stone....but this is all i have on this one. It does seem like a nice stone and from all the other stones of his that i''ve seen (he does get a got of them GIA graded) the GIA and GemScan certs are always in line in colour, clarity etc.

All feedback is appreciated.
Thanks!

Starr, I''m glad you loved the stone! It very well could be the one for you. I''m glad it''s eye clean.

However, we really need to see the numbers (depth, table, crown, and pavillion) if you want an informed opinion about the cut of the stone. The cut is the most important aspect of how a diamond will perform, and an ideal label unfortunately is not enough information. We''ll try to help as much as we can. Is there any way that the vendor can run a SARIN or get these measurements without sending it in to get a GIA? Although, a GIA cert would be substantial peace of mind even though it takes longer to get.
