Before I start, I'd just like to thank everyone for this forum. From the people who post here, to the forum owners and admins, this is one of the most informative sites I've ever seen.
Now...HELP!
A bit of back story...my GF & I were shopping about a month ago. She ran across a setting she loves (micro pave, round, with a table). It's nice, and I like it too. She has compared every setting we've seen since to this one, so it's obviously the one to get.
The setting is $2000, or $1595 if I buy the stone from them too. Seemed a bit high, but she loves it and that's what matters.
Now, the stone has been my dilemma. I've looked at a LOT of stones (with my own loupe) but I'm far from an expert. The store has two stones that I like a lot.
Stone 1:
0.91
D
6.35x6.42x3.76
SI2
D% 58.9
T% 57
C angle 32
P angle 41
It comes out to a 0.6 on the HCA. That's good, yes? I looked at the ring under the loupe and I had a HARD time seeing any inclusions. It's got two clouds, opposite each other, on the edges that could be hidden pretty easily. I was impressed. The only negative was that it has a thin girdle. Price: $5255
Stone 2:
0.93
H
6.27x6.3x3.74
VVS2
They didn't have a full grading report on this one. Price: $4970.
Both stones are full of fire and brilliance. The only way I could really tell a difference was to put them face down on a white piece of paper.
I'm leaning towards the D (stone 1). It's simply gorgeous.
Now....in looking on Blue Nile, it seems they have several comparable stones in the $4200-$5000 range. The big bonus there is that I don't have to pay for tax.
So the choice really comes down to this...gamble on a stone from Blue Nile, pay no tax, but a pay a higher price for the setting....or buy the ring with the D as is.
What would you do?
The most important thing to me is that she has a beautiful stone that sparkles like mad, in the setting that she loves. I guess I'm really just trying to convince myself to spend $7500 on a ring and/or looking for ways to knock the price down a bit. Any advice?
