So I bought this rong bc I love the setting. It is 14 k gold and diamonds. Have no idea what the stone is. Would a cubic zirconia appear so imperfect?image_3053.jpg

There's no way to tell with absolute certainty from a photo. It could be an aquamarine, it could be glass - it could be anything. However if you take it into a jewellers they might be able to narrow it down slightly by testing the RI of the stone. It's a beautiful setting though and I can see why you were drawn to it.

Thank you. I do realize it would be hard to tell what kind of stone it is but I would like to know is if glass can look this imperfect?

It looks like a low RI stone, like white topaz, some pale form of beryl, or it could be glass, or a synthetic stone.

I would think that if they bother to put gold and diamonds for the setting(other than silver, SS and CZ or syn moissanite) , the center stone would be more valuable than just glass.

Sometimes synthetic stones are set with gold and diamonds.

I have seen older synthetic spinel rings with diamond and gold mounts.

Not so sure about glass though.

I agree.

Maybe the stone is not imperfect - maybe you clean the pavillion???

Unlikely to be CZ but could well be a synthetic stone which was popular way back when. A good cleaning is the first step to help ID the stone. Then we can start guessing. Of course, if you have some basic gemmological tools, it will help too.

So the stone was cleaned prior to the picture. It was steam cleaned. I guess my question is: are there A
Any tests to determine if it is glass that I can actually do at home? I can't get to my jewelers for a few days.

Could it be that the stone was not original to the setting? It does not look quite right to me in terms of setting.

Does anyone know where I can purchase a budget stone to put in this setting? It's a 14 by 7 mm

Hmmm....most coloured gemstones do not survive steam cleaning...

Please define what your budget is. $100? $500? $1000? 14 x 7 mm is not a calibrated size which makes the search more challenging.

Hmmm... because of the crystal shape tourmaline is often cut in elongated cuts, so I'd look at those, if your budget allows it. Tourmaline can get quite pricey.

Amethyst would be easy and classic.

ETA
Option removed because it won't fit.

Use your tongue to test the stone.

If it is glass it will feel warm, a natural stone will feel cold on your tongue.

I'd like to spend no more than $150 dollars. TIA

Multicolour has a similar search, thought not sure if the measurements translate for non-cut-corner stones. Anyway here are a few rectangular-ish stones in that size range for under $250. I found it hard to tell about windows in the beryl & aqua. Also I think those are fairly soft stones, though I'm guessing this will not be an everyday ring. Hope this helps. Lovely setting!!

The only ones I'd recommend are the danburites because the rest have windows.

Thanks LK -- I have trouble with photos for light colored stones on a light background re: windows (ETA esp on my laptop screen!. I liked the danburites best too. I wonder whether getting a custom danburite is doable in budget? I also like the ametrine listed in the gemselect search results, but bi-color isn't everyone's thing.

This sunstone from Cindi Stair has a lovely color from the images, although it's a wee bit smaller than your target size (11.94 x 6.65) and a wee bit over budget ($218)... don't know if a jeweler could set it a bit lower than the current stone & have it fit nicely...? (And it would be better protected if set lower.)
