Yikes...I noticed today a nice chip in one the stones on a family heirloom cluster ring.
The ring has been in my family since the very early 1900''s. Its platinum with four main stones (all OEC), 1.3 ct, .6 ct, .6ct and .4 ct and lots of melee for an overall caratweight estimated at 3.4 ctw.
Last week I dropped the ring on my kitchen floor (tile) and didn''t think much about it. Today as I went to put it on, I noticed what looked like a little cloud near one of the prongs on one of the .6''s. At first I thought I needed to clean it - thought there was something stuck on it, and then upon closer inspection I realized it had a nice chip out of it.
My question is this - rather than replace the stone (sentimental reasons), can the chipped area be polished, to at least return the shine to the little area that was chipped.
It''s driving me crazy - no one would probably ever even notice it, but I know it''s there and I''m heartbroken.
It is insured, but I''d still rather try to fix than replace.
Advice or thoughts? Thanks!
